View past history of some phones, like the 9000, where the OS upgrade was carrier dependent. There's a possibility that even though the 9700 is supposed to be OS6 compatible, there will be carriers that will not approve OS6 for various reasons. If this happens, what is the consensus here of what you would do?

Same as we've always done... delete the vendor file and use another carrier build

If the webkit browser turns out to be service book controlled, somebody somewhere will soon find a way around it

I wasn't aware that the 9000 OS updates were carrier dependent

    When did this suddenly happen?

Rogers has not even approved OS5 and we're going into OS6. I was told that its a marketing strategy. They only have the newest OS in the new phones so that people will buy the newer models. Nice! I will continue to use other carriers OS's, my ISP is a jole when it comes to updates.

There are rumours that the webkit browser is service book controlled.
So if your carrier decides not to support OS6, you won't get their service books and it ain't gonna work

...there are also rumours saying it isn't

    Well that's absolute rubbish!

What OS are you using on your 9700?

EDIT: Sorry, just read the rest of your post
Can't say I blame Rogers really. Those are old devices now and were never originally designed for OS 5.
There are many other carriers who seem to have taken the same decision.

i will drop a custom os on that 9700 sucker, but it does suck that i cant officially get os6 on my gf's storm 2 or our kids storm 1. so if there is a custom os6 for the storm and t shall be on them. so stf to all the service providers who said "ur phone is old as dirt and spend more money for a new one so we can make money off u and buy a cruise ship."

If the OS doesn't come out for the 9700, I well sell all for 4 of mine and buy a 9780 or 9800.

If T-Mobile doesn't approve it, but there is a leak that works well, I will download that.

If service books don't work, that will suck for sure....I guess I will deal as I have been or be further in debt, lol!

Wife will kill me, but I will get to play with a 9800 a lot sooner, haha!

    What would I do?

I'd either load it, like the other posts suggest, from another carrier by deleting the vendor file or I'd just sell the damn BlackBerry since the HD2 is on my main line anyways...Nokia's E73 would be just fine for me.

hmmm. . . well we know that AT&T will be getting an OS 6 phone, i.e. the 9800 so even if service books may not be available for a particular device the info can be pulled from a supported device and put into a build that is supported by another carrier.

But I doubt I will have much to worry about if the 9800 is going to roll out shortly my guess is a 9700 OS6 update will not be far behind for me :-)

I don't care if I get OS6 or not actually so it doesn't matter if my carrier pushes it out.
