Since the specs for the 9700 and 8900 are quite close except for the processor, which is 112MH slower on the curve, it seems to me that OS 6 should e able to run on the 8900. What are the arguments against?

This is what I was looking for:

BlackBerry 6 will debut on the new BlackBerry Torch™ smartphone (announced today) available from AT&T on August 12 and it is also designed to run on select BlackBerry smartphones already in market. Subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead, the new OS is expected to be available for the BlackBerry Bold™ 9700, BlackBerry Bold™ 9650 and BlackBerry Pearl™ 3G, as well as future BlackBerry smartphones.

It runs fine... but what does that have to do with the 8900 not getting it?

8900 doesnt have enough memory to run it.

Can't be about memory, both 9700 and 8900 have the same amount, has to be the processor. pi guy, it is just that if it runs smoothly on a 9700, I don't see why it wouldn't run fine on a 8900 or maybe you can tell me?

so they do, i could've sworn 8900 had only 128. either way rim made a statement saying it wasn't going to get it in the list they said would.

Yes, I know they're leaks available but when are we going to see an official 5 for the 8900?

There is no need to use an OS from your carrier. AT&T has not released 5.0 for my device either, but I haven't used an AT&T OS since last November.

You can use the latest official 5.0 that is stickied in this forum. Just delete the vendor .xml file, and you are good to go.

I realize this makes me either stubbon or an ***** or both but I'm waiting for T-Mobile to bring out the official 5 for the 8900. I'm just surprised its been over a year and a half and its still no upgrade.

Damn man that was a little harsh.... totally uncalled for. Especially when LAK is 100% correct. Getting an official tmobile 5.0 is the same exact thing if you got a 5.0 from another carrier.

And the funny thing is you said LAK is stubborn when you're the one that is stubborn by not just getting another 5.0 from somewhere else...

And have fun waiting longer, b/c I doubt tmobile is going to release an official 5.0 for your old phone...

That is why I don't understand why T-Mobile US still hasn't released it. Now that it seems as if they won't get 6 will they at least get 5 out or since they don't even sell the phone on the web site not bother to update it at all?

This is not a thread about T-Mobile...

IF 8900 can run it, it will never officially support it IMHO.

Lol. Sorry. The basic point I was making is if the 8900 isn't going to get OS6, according to reports, will there still be official OS upgrades released?

I wasn't trying to personalize it until I answered questions about my specific situation.

My bro has a 9700, and I have the 8900. I don't believe that the 8900 has the processor speed to handle a 6.0 OS. I have 2 apps that use from 3rd party, and I took lots of stuff off when I did the upgrade to 5.0, and my phone runs slow sometimes. 6.0 would probably stop the phone, requiring multiple battery pulls or "alt/cap/del" holds.

And no, T-Mobile will never release a 5.0 update for the 8900. The phone isn't even carried by them anymore, and hasn't been in the US for close to a year. If they don't vend the handset anymore, they won't put effort into an update of the OS.

Just run a 5.0 version from here if you want one. They work fine.

I'm running my 8900 on an OLDER 5.0 release that is "official" for other carriers. No US carrier has officially released OS 5.x for 8900.

I am not sure I am getting your argument, I do have lots of third party apps (over 30 I guess) on my 8900, running the latest 5.0 OS and everything is very snappy, no need to reboot it...I know Kevin thinks it s more a question of memory type than amount of memory.
