So I got an e-mail letting me know that "Se7en" has been updated. When I went to download it, I had to pay $2.99 to upgrade. I think upgrade fees are a very unethical practice.

I do need to because the old version isn't compatible with the 9550. I bought it for the 9530.

I think you are. It wasn't compatible with the Storm2 for a long time (I couldn't download it from MobiHand).

I forgot about the themes not made with 5.0 (landscape white bars)

stock theme sucks nuts....much better looking and more productive themes out there by far!

I agree the Zen theme looks like it was outdated about 2001. But do agree on buying themes, there are many free that look are perform much better.

I understand upgrade fees for major revision jumps. What I hate is not being able to download the odl version that I paid for once an upgrade is submitted.

I agree. This practice is bad and forces an upgrade even if you just want to keep what you have.

Just like the cost of Hedones themes are by far overpriced for what you get, on the other hand Elecite themes are worth the money.

And before anyone asks, I'm not affiliated with either, just stating my opinion based on what I've purchased from both.

Do a backup of your apps with BBSAK and you should be able to keep the old version of the theme... Just did through the backup a bit and see if you can isolate the files.
