OK, so I felt the need to break in the new subforum and post in it.

Here's a bit of speculation for you. Expect RIM devices that release to be able to have the availability be made for 1 generation release of a future OS version. By this I mean. If your BB came with OS4.5, you might get 5.0. If the BB came with 5.0 you might get 6, etc. Now, it's important to realize I mean "released" when I say "came with". So, upon release of the handset to market... use that as a guideline.

    What are your thoughts?

Doubt it. The 8520/30 came with OS 5. There's no way based on current rumors that will run the full OS6. The specs on that are equv. To the bold 9000, which had os4.

If anything I'd say they'd run the non weblog browser version.

Incorrect, I have the 9000 and my brother has a 8520 which has double the app memory of bold 9000

PKcable posted this yesterday, I realize it's not "gospel" until proof is shown, but if he's right then some of the newer/older models will still see a version of 6

    Crap, I mis-spoke. My apologies.

A better comparison would be the Curve 8900 and the Curve 8520. Both have 512Mhz processors and 256MB ROM. 8900 came with 4.x, 8520 with 5.0.

I would think it weird if the 8520 got OS6 but not the 8900 as both would be roughly equally capable or not capable of running the same Operating system (based on hardware specs). The current rumors dictate that the 8900 will not get OS6.

And while the 8330 got OS5, the 8110 did not.

    Hopefully we'll know soon

What would be nice for the older models is to have an OS6 lite...in short, one without the WebKit browser integration if it will bog down the phone that much.

Of course, when OS6 does come out, if not available for the "older"models, perhaps we'll see some nice custom hybrids.

8520s ship with 4.6, what have you guys been drinking?

Trackball devices not getting 6 makes sense since RIM wants to be done with the trackball. Wait. 8910 released in China... with trackball? Ok, make 6 for all devices with 256mb.

Doesn't the 8330 have 96mb while all other devices prior have 64mb or memory? Maybe that's why it ended up getting 5.0? I thought this was covered before...

People should just accept the fact that devices get old. RIM should make 6.0 available only for devices that launch after August/September 2010 and call it a day. Forget backwards compatibility and move on. It's not like 6.0 is a mandatory upgrade.

People cry about the fact that RIM is behind yet they are up in arms if they don't get 6.0 on their 7250.

I completely agree with you. And before anybody bashes this post, I'm not an apple fan over BB by far, believe me I love my Berry...But I do have an iPod touch 2 gen, and even my old 1st gen got iOS4 love...RIM isn't the only company giving 3 and 4 year old devices love and keeping things backwards compatible. Granted RIM has 100x more devices on the market than Apple does, but even still...Phones released within the last year should get some OS6 love...At least that's my opinion...

This is what I've been saying for the longest time. It seems like every BB will be entitled to one full OS upgrade to the next version. I'm sure a few will be left out but I would consider this to be fair.

After most of the kinks were taken care of on the 9530 and it went to 5.0, it became a pretty decent device. I knew what I had when I bought it and saw the issues and I was really happy to get that upgrade. If I didn't think it was a good device from the beginning I wouldn't have gotten it. I'm with the people saying everyone shouldn't be entitled to upgrades for years but one large refresh is nice to have.

That is correct, even if you did get OS6 loaded on a 64mb device, you would have like 3MB left for application memory...

It's about as good as the 9650 is. Qualcomm hasn't made any newly released chipsets in a while that fit the bill for a CDMA spec'd Blackberry. So, the S1 had the chipset of the 9630 and the S2 should have the same one that's in the 9650. That being said... the 9650 has been indicated as a handset that's due to get OS6. In reality, I think memory speed and size availability were really the big hits for OS6 compatibility rather then CPU speed.

How big is the OS supposed to be? 200MB? In that case, I don't see why 256MB owners wouldn't install it. You'd be looking at app space like the Storm 1 but at least you'd have all the benefits.

Forcing owners of the Curve 8530 and Tour 9630 to upgrade only a year (less than!) its release feels kinda unfair. Your phone should, for the most part, be upgradeable over a year to 18 months of ownership.
