what about these new att data plans?

do you guys really think you will keep it under 200 mb or 2 gigs?

my buddy used 4.5 gigs just last month!!! thank god he is grandfathered into unlimited.

keep in mind all you bb users, you will lose your bb plans and have to sign on one of these new plans

do you realize how much 4 gigs of data is on 3g? its more than you think. Not only that but unlimited isn't even unlimited, once you hit 5 gigs I believe you get flagged

I have the Unlimited Data plan and use WiFi when I am at home so I am not worried about any data issues or going over.

I checked my data usage and figured I was in for a shock but I average right around 250mb a month... in fact, I've only used 1.7gb of data since I bought the phone last September.

I thought I used my phone quite a bit; apparently I need to stream more porn

The question I have is at what point can att push unlimited users into one of these new plans? Is a phone upgrade enough to do it or if you have to actually opt into it. Down the road as networks get stronger sand faster devices are just going to suck more data at which point the unlimited plan will be golden. That is of course if att doesn't decide to force you into the new tier. The only way I will voluntarily opt for new plan if they will void my current contract ie allow me an upgrade out of band way early.

4 gigs is a TON of data. And iPhone has nothing to do with it; WM, Android, Web OS use the same amounts of data.

2 gigs alone is 3200 web pages, 8000 text-only emails, 600 emails with a photo, 600 emails with an attachment, 20 hours of streaming music, download 30 apps/games (4mb each), 300 social networking posts, and 40 minutes of streaming video.

If you go to 120 web pages every day alone in the month on your phone, you have other issues other than data use and need to unhook from the phone let alone splitting all those other aspects into per day (266 emails plus 40 with attachments; nearly an hour of steaming music, some video, some social networking, etc, and app a day, etc). Youd have to be on the phone 8 hours straight a day every day.

If youre using more than 2 gigs then youre just streaming all the time for sake of doing it and not caring how you affect others. I cant understand the people who say theyre streaming Pandora 12 hours a day. They DO make free radio stations on any radio with tons of music. You CAN load a few thousand songs on your iphones. I dont get this inherent need to stream half the day every day of the month.

Wow. I can't imagine using 4 gigs of data in a month. I only use 40-50 mb per month now bc I am usually on wifi. I am strongly considering dropping down to the 200 mb plan. I'm going to wait until I have that new iphone in my grubby little palms before I decide for sure, though.

Not true. I was scared of this myself but earlier today I upgraded someone from a BB to an iphone, and unlimited was an option (which they chose).

iPhones are NOT data hogs, 2GB is NOT that much data. A typical website home page is around 100kb without any images, with images it can approach 1mb and all you did was hit the home page for CNN. ATT and others would like to make you feel bad, so they can charge you, but the real problem is upgrading the Internet infrastructure to the same level as Japan for heaven's sake.

Very true. 4gigs is a HUGE amount of data... considering that you have wifi on the phone it's enormous. I never hit those numbers when I had my iphone...not even close.
In Canada we never had unlimited data... we have 6gb (this is a promotion only ) for when the iphone comes out then goes back to normal 1gb for $30.
I always had the 6gigs data package for $30 a month and I Never even came close to 2gigs in a month.
Maybe there will he a promotion for the release of the iphone4... like 5gigs for the same price 2gigs. But like Stuaw said... if your doing that much Data on your phone...... you should really take a good look at your life because something is missing lol

2 Gigs could be a problem for those that stream radio a lot. My wife passes 2GB easily because of this. So for any new users that have the new data plans, I would imagine that may be one of the few ways to actually top 2GB consistently.

4gbs is definitely a lot. I tethered for about 4-6
hours a day, 4 days a week on my school
computers while still using my iPhone and I barely
hit 1gb of data for a month. This was also done
    on my Nexus One.

And a lot of pages have iphone specific webpages and not every page is riddled with images and complex layouts, so the point is moot.

Lets say AVERAGELY across all your browsing a webpage is 350kb. "From 2003 to 2008 the average web page grew from 93.7K to over 312K (see Figure 1), some 233% (Domenech et al. 2007, Flinn & Betcher 2008)" Average Web Page Size Triples Since 2003 - web page statistics and survey trends for page size and web objects

Theres 1024kb in 1mb and 1024mb per GB. So 1 gig is 1048576kb, and 2 gigs is 2097152kb. Divide that by our average 350kb page and thats almost 6000 web pages a month, around 200 pages (and possibly more if there are light pages or "mobile pages") a day JUST to hit 2gb.

If you need to do that much browsing, then you REALLY need a disconnect from your phone and get a real life with real people. 200+ web pages, reading content on each is a SIGNIFICANT portion of one's day.

I'd use more if I wasn't afraid of overage charges.
Currently on a 500MB plan, and unless I'm on wifi:
    -No streaming
    -No tethering
    -No downloading (apps etc.)

I agree with stuaw11. Im a fairly heavy phone user, or atleast I thought I was, but to use 4GB is unimaginable. If I used the phone enough to rack up 4GB worth of data I would need to take a step back and evaluate what Im doing with my time. Not to mention Id have one pissed off wife . The only thing I can say is that if at some point Pandora gets blocked at work then I will have to use the iPhone to stream music.

I think you are absolutely right, if you are not an iPhone person by now, you shouldnt sign up now that they are changing the data plans, ive had both 3g and 3gs, and i guarrantee you that on june 15th i will be pre ordering an iPhone4.... on the other hand you can see it as... if you never had an iphone and have no clue what the iphone is about, how can you miss what you never had... (unlimited data)

I know that if that 2 year commitment for the upgrade elegibility came with changing my data plan, i would outright leave AT&T and get me one of those flimsy android phones Verizon has, or go back to sprint and try the HTC EVO 4G....

I think I've stated this a few times. I pull up hundereds of bills a month, iPhones, Blackberries, the occasional Android device, WM, you name it. I rarely see anyone go over 2GB's, maybe one or two people. Blackberries especially, rarely use over 100MB's for the average user.

This is pulling up REAL bills and analyzing REAL WORLD data usage by REAL people. These are the people that make up 98% of AT&T's customer base, not the power users that are being put off by the new plans.

For the record, I use about 5-6GB's a month so I lump myself in "power user" catagory.
