Any phone having 512Mb memory is a certainty to support OS 6.

    Phones with 256 Mb probably.

Any phone with less than 256Mb probably won;t be able to run OS 6.

I base this on the fact that the latest BlackBerrys are released with 512Mb and the next Bold, the 9700a will be essentially the same phone (OK it will have a 5Mp camera) but will have 512Mb.

You will recall that the only 83xx model to be able to run OS 5 was the 8330 series which has 96Mb whilst the 8320, 8310 and 8300 could not because they only came with 64Mb.

The faster processors in newr phones will surely be a decider too.

My understanding is the current trackpad devices (except for the Curve) will support BB6 as well as the Storm2.

I think a lot of people think 512 is going to get it for sure. the question is - when will it be released.

So far I've heard its just the 9650 and the new series of BB's coming out soon. 512mb's makes sense from what I'm hearing. but didnt it run on the 9700 at WES for a hot minute?

I just got the storm 2 all I am looking for is the web kit browser and if rim can't do at least that for me I will move on to android for sure. If rim leaves current models behind they will make a lot of people mad IMO.

Just my thoughts RIM can make os 6 for any device they want its their software and they make it. As far as the memory goes I remember sal's review of the tour 2 and I think it had 2gigs of on board memory. I think they just change it to 512MB. I think it just come with the upgrade for the phone. Trust and believe RIM is not going to leave the older phones in the dust.

Yes but at the same time they cannot just start stripping things out to make it run on older devices. Well you could, but then youd have OS 5 Would you put Windows 7 on a pentium 4 machine with 512mb of ram?

I can understand why they would leave phones out though. I love my 8530 but I also realize that it was the cheap BB so how can I expect something that I got for free from Sprint to actually be capable of OS6. I do hope I'm wrong but I also don't want to upgrade to something that would slow my Curve down. Its no problem ill just get a new one if I'm feeling the OS6 envy at that time. Now for all the new bolds and such yeah it would be wise to put them on the list for OS6 but if they will slow down the new OS or not function how it would on the new phones that are coming out in a few months I could also see why RIM wouldn't want that either because people would leave BB saying "os6 was a piece of ****" when in reality its because it was a new OS on an older phone.

I think September was the last educated guess after what RIM folk were saying 'unofficially' at the last WES.

But as with everything... there could be a delay. Having said that, they wouldn't want to delay the release of their new handsets either.
