Buying any new smartphone retail is expensive...anyone buying the bold 9650 at full retail to avoid using your upgrade?

It crossed my mind but I don't know if its enough of an upgrade to my storm2 to justify spending that much.

Yeah, I'm still thinking about it myself... After it's released I'll probably end up caving in after a couple days and buy the stupid thing retail because I'm no where near an upgrade...

Oh well, glad I've got some cash stashed away for new toys... Though this will probably end up being the last one for a while!

I usually buy new on eBay. You can get smartphones for about $100 cheaper than retail at Verizon and older smartphones for about $200 cheaper.

To those of you buying retail-depending on what kind of plan you have you could just add a line and get a new BB at the reduced price and have them switch your current number to the new BB. It would be WAY cheaper! Just a thought.

Kimberg - what do you do with that extra line? Pay monthly for it and not use it? Cancelling it costs. Or am I missing something? I'm a bit interested in hearing how one can do that!

Yup...buying retail online first day it's released. Coming out of an Omnia II after only 5 months...upgrade isn't until December. Considered that 'add a second line' thing last time I was shopping, but at $10/mo x 24 mo contract the gap between upgrade and retail closes pretty quickly. Not worth it IMO to get tied into another contract.

I too am going to pay full retail...if I ever see the damn thing! Upgrade in Jan, maybe then I'll be able to get a slider.
It's looking more and more like I'm gonna have a great birthday on the 29th as most indications show 9650 will be out by then (fingers crossed, sign of the cross, ect...) Tick Tock Verizon, there's a lot of people waiting on you!!!

Sprints "Playbook" has the Bold listed at the exact same full retail price as the Tour... 449.99. That's not much higher than the 299.99 that they want you to pay at the retail store before the mail in rebate.

It's funny, I have worked in my brothers Repair centers for 7 years and still have to pay retail for my phones if I want to upgrade sooner than once a year... I'll probably wait until July this time to get the upgrade price though. If its half as buggy as the Tour was on its release it may be better to wait for that first firmware upgrade.

ps.... I will have a working Bold 9650 at my store one week from today (May 16th).... If I can get some alone time I'll try to get some early pics and video of the unboxing before the official release.

No upgrade for me, so if I go for it I go retail. Anybody know what retail will be. <$500 I hope. +1 for the ebay comment. Could save a little cash getting it there.

EDIT: just saw your $449 price comment for sprint. Wonder what verizon will be?

Okay, this is what I was figuring, full retail for 9650 would be $500 to $600. So my suggestion was to add a line (for certain plans) it's only $10/month. Get a new BB with that new line and switch your old number to the new BB. There are no problems doing this. A new line will cost you w/taxes about 13/month. 13 x 24=$312. Full retail $600, extra line $312, savings $288. You would not use your the new line, but you would use the new phone. It's all legal and above board. I'm sure this is not an idea for everybody but it might be for some. I was just trying to give hope to those people that can't afford to pay full price but could afford an extra$13/month for 2 years.

Wouldn't you be required to add a data plan to a new line with a new BB?

  19. kimberg's Avatar
Yes, you would need to add the data plan into your monthly expenses but that holds true whether you pay full price or add a line. You would only pay for 1 data plan per BB no matter how the old and new lines/phones are combined. Did I answer your question?

O.K. not trying to argue with anyone on my 3rd post...Swear! Some folks are assuming that the 9650 will sell for $199 (after $100 MIR or online credit and w/ 2yr contract). $199 + $312 (extra line) = $511. The Tour retails for what $490? I wouldn't think that the 9650 would retail for much more than $500. Narrows the margin pretty quickly. Still you make a good point that for some it would drag the expense out for 24 months instead of one time.

I think there are good arguments for adding an additional line and have considered it in the past. The math just never worked out for me.

I get Sprint 12 month contract discount 150.00 + what ever discounts device has on it so no telling how much it will cost me.

    Now it gets tricky,
Will I go with EVO or 9650 lol

This thread is about whether or not people are going to pay retail or not. My suggestion was for those people that can't afford full price and or cannot renew their contract for a while. If you are able to buy a new BB with a new 2yr contract then my suggestion is not for you.

    on sprint:
if you have one line, adding a second takes you to an anything data family plan..that is $40/mo extra.
if you already have an anything data family plan, adding one extra line is $20/mo extra.

it cannot be done for $10/mo
