well well, I have to admit I did the same thing as well, very strange they have 2 links for the same phone ... little embarrassed, but not much ... lol
So far I've noticed:
New boot screen w/progress bar (woot!) But it still takes forever (anti-woot!)
The profiles have changed (for the better), so I need to fix them up.
It's automatically downloading some updates for Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, and Flickr, using "Application Updater".
There is threaded SMS, but not MMS. I never had much luck getting SMS to work longer than a day, so I don't care.
Pocket Informant doesn't like the fact I got a new OS, so I imagine I'll need to get an updated version.
Phone calls work, DC seems to work (don't know anyone on DC anymore), voicemail works, internet works, didn't lose a thing in the upgrade, but the upgrade did take forever.

Thanks for the update, I'm in the process of loading it now and will update on the DC.
It would appear that SouthernLinc or RIM has pulled a bit of a fast one of sorts. Download Manager sees the update and the vendor.xml file has been removed, however it will not install. See attached screen shot for the added security feature that has been added with * Only active BlackBerry service subscribers are entitled to install this BlackBerry Device Software upgrade. I have a full subscription to BIS service so there must be another reason for it not loading.
I was thinking the same thing, but I have loaded OS from Nextel before so not sure what they have done unless it is a way to get rid of boost users ??? Not that I am on boost, but it would be something to consider ... has any booster tried installing this OS yet ???

Anyone else experiencing this problem ???
I got the same thing and then it wouldn't install after clicking next, so I used BBSAK and the Application Loader software it links to. Still loading. The phone currently is at the new Blackberry load bar screen and Loader says it's waiting for device initialization.
Looking through the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8350iAMEA_v5.0.0.577_P3.2.0.24 directory I see there is a file called TheSims3.alx ... lol ... does that mean you can play the Sims now on your BB ... someone check the games folder out and see if that is there ??? Just curious ...
I just tried BBSAK and the application loader did not find any updates ... first time have tried it so maybe I am missing something with it then ???
After downloading the OS, I then installed it, and removed the Vendor.xml file. After hitting the roadblock with Desktop Manager, I started BBSAK and clicked the LoadOS button, from there it found the 5.0 software. I don't think it gave me any options at all, it just immediately picked it.
If it doesn't work, maybe try and uninstall the update and rework through the procedure.
Currently it is reloading the device data. Been at it for an hour now.
