I was wondering if anyone knew if and when OS 6.0 is released, if it will be running on the 9700? Really close to upgrading to one, but I would hold off if there is no plans for it to run OS 6. I've kept my 8320 for over 2 years and have had NO PROBLEMS with it. 3G and GPS are really appealing (not to mention the hardware specs of the 9700), but if it is not upgradeable to the upcoming OS, then why not wait for a new device running the new OS? Perhaps I should wait until after the WES to see if they release any new info. Any thoughts?

I'd be very surprised if RIM's flagship model didn't support OS 6.0

...but until it's released, it's all guesswork and speculation

The 9700 should be able to run OS 6, but OS 5 was supposed to be able to run on 83xx phones. What seems to have happened there was that only the 8330 had 96Mb of memory and that was what was needed to run OS 5. The rest of the 83xx range only had 64Mb and was thus stuck on OS 4.x.

The other factor in running an OS is processor speed. Microsoft have always published a minimum configuration requirement for their OSs and these comprise 3 essential numbers. Memory (we've done that), CPU speed (faster is better - simple) and in the case of MS OSs, disk space. On the BlackBerry this means Device Memory again.

On balance I believe that the 9700 will run OS 6 because our phone has 256Mb memory and a fairly fast processor for this year. If OS 6 is released before the middle of 2011, then I think we will be able to run the new OS. If OS 6 is delayed then we may find that the minimum CPU required could be faster than the 9700 but I doubt this will be the case.

Allthough their flagship model doesn't support OpenGL while their low end 8530 and the storm 2 both have it, so I wouldn't put my money on RIM keeping their flagship with the most features.

Also we are only at 5.0.0.XXX, so I feel that OS6 is a long long way away, to the point where the 9700 will not be the flagship any longer.

What's the changelog like for the new OS? Anything in particular people should be looking forward to?

If you Google it, you'll find that OS 5.2 has 'some interesting new features'... and OS 6.0 is 'in the pipeline'

It depends on how much time it will take to develop first stable working build,
    Then......
It will be definitely launched with a new device ( common theory).....
    Then
a port will be made to run it on older devices ( like 9700 or 8900)....
    Then
Beta os leak ( we might get it here on CB).......
    Then
Long waiting... Till wireless carriers make a official launch....

    Huh....
    Still a very long journey.......

Wasn't their mention on the front page a few weeks ago that what would have been 5.2 will now be 6.0 instead? So, 5.0, 5.1, then 6.0 if that's true.
I think the new UI was supposed to com with 5.2 or so. Maybe RIM finally realized that if they introduce a new UI, they should make that a jump to the next full version number.

    Maybe CX can confirm?

    I think it's silly that 4.6 wasn't just 5.0 personally.
And you'd hope that RIM employs marketing wizards above my level that would inform them they want to get to the next full version level. The general public doesn't appreciate the difference from 4.3 to 4.5, or 4.6 to 4.7.1. (Nor do I really on the last! Haha)

Now if someone would only send them a memo that people want bigger screens and/or even higher resolutions as new devices are introduced. (Nothing short of lazy that the 9700 has the same screen as the 8900, or the Storm 2 as the Storm 1, in my opinion.)

Thanks for the input guys. Just nervous that I'll get a device that's obsolete within less than a year of owning it.

OpenGL is only supported on the Qualcomm chipset phones i.e. CDMA. The GSM phones ues a different chipset hence no OpenGL support.

I personally believe we maybe seeing OS6.0 for 9700 soon after the 9800 (aka 9700a) is released.

Just remembered the 8900 did have different 4.0s, guess that means we won't have 6.0 for a very long time. lol

    With 4.0 they went to 5.0. There was no 4.1 or 4.2, so I doubt it'll be a 5.1.
There was OS 4.2, 4.3, 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7, so there will probably be at least a 5.1 before OS 6.0

I wouldn't put money on seeing 6.0 in less than a year of owning your device let alone it making it obsolete

I think the 6.0 OS will rock the 9700 like no tomorrow, seeing how its the flagship at the moment..

so it might be optimized to work best on 9700, I can't wait for it myself
    its gona kick !

Agreed. 9700 will loose the flag position with the launch of OS6 and whatever phone it first goes to. IMO
