So why don't all smart phone users use google talk or msn? Then all smart phones could I'm each other for free over any format... Instead bbm for bbs or ping for the iphones... If everyone got google talk we would all be connected to each other no problem... Does this make sense?

Personal preference really. Not everyone is going to like the same things.
I haven't had a MSN account in years and Google Talk has no appeal to me.
With BBM, Yahoo my IM needs are met.

    Google Talk does not exist!

Google Talk is XMPP (rebranded). Nimbuzz and IM+ are also XMPP (rebranded).

See Jabber.org for the truth behind GTalk.

Why don't we have *any* unbranded Jabber IM on BlackBerry? I would like to login to any compatible server instead of being constrained to one entry-point.

Everyone would have to use google talk... that makes it no better than anything else.

Why doesn't everyone use AIM instead, or MSN, etc, etc? Circular argument...
Also the ramifications of using GTalk vs BBM are very, very different...

I was wondering this the other day, but not specifically about GoogleTalk.

If 3 of my friends were on non-BB's, then potentially, if we all use GoogleTalk or some sort of IM (yahoo, msn...etc) wouldn't it be relatively the same?

Things like google talk require logging in and staying logged in to external servers, which is one of the problems.
