- With the new 5.0's rolling out, our keyboard feature seems to be done away with. Some of us, like me, do not have the best mute button. If I don't hit mine just right it doesn't work. Sometimes it may take 5-6 presses.
So is it being phased out? Say it aint so!
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com03-02-10 05:00 PMLike 0 - It did always seem kind of silly to me why they would have both a stand-by and keyboard-lock feature. Kind of pointless really. I would rather have the mute button disabled and stick to the standard Hold-A keyboard lock... as opposed to using both...03-02-10 05:55 PMLike 0
- Try AutoLock:
geek and proud - BlackBerry Software
It's free, lightweight, simple, and it makes sure your phone locks.
You can also set it to give you a grace period. When my backlight starts dim, a lot of times I want to try to catch it and wake it up before it locks. AutoLock let you set an amount of time AFTER the backlight goes off before the phone locks.
EDIT: just realized that AutoLock still requires you to have a password set. And I still think it's silly not to have one set anyway. I guess the reason I haven't been affected by the change in how the keylock/standby thing works is because I use a password and AutoLock. I never have to mess with the Mute key.Last edited by digitalb0y; 03-02-10 at 06:05 PM.

And I do not want a password, I don't let my phone leave my side. I have my bold so I can do anything anyone can do with a computer or phone, and be much faster at it. I hate spending 5 seconds with the mute key, its frustrating.

Why do you think forums and email accounts require passwords? If you're going to do the same things from your phone, why isn't it just as important to have one on the device you use to access all that stuff? Seriously, a four digit password you can enter by feel is not any harder to enter than * and the call button or the mute key. I don't even notice doing it.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com03-02-10 11:28 PMLike 0 - So come up with a password that takes less time to enter than fumbling with the mute key. Then you get the added bonus of knowing your phone will get wiped on the off chance that it DOES leave your side and someone tries to see what they can find in there. AT THE VERY LEAST if you dropped your phone I'd have the contact info for all your friends, and I could have any forum you use send me a password reminder. Push email's fast enough I'd have it instantly and I could put your phone right back where it was sitting and you'd have no idea.

I keep a simple password, something that i got used to very quick... its 4 keys... but to combat the easiness of my password, i reduced the retried down to 3 to eliminate the most persistent of would-be-ers.
And yes, my friends have grabbed my phone threating to restart it.... i dont mind... i have a back up on my computer (log in protected, and file protected)...
I know my info is safe....
is yours?03-02-10 11:41 PMLike 0 - With the new 5.0's rolling out, our keyboard feature seems to be done away with. Some of us, like me, do not have the best mute button. If I don't hit mine just right it doesn't work. Sometimes it may take 5-6 presses.

Once a password is set, the K key, Alt + Enter, the AutoLock App from geek-and-proud, etc. all work the way they did in older OS builds. Any one of those methods still locks the keyboard, but you can't even get to the lock function without setting a password.
I think it's awesome that all the people who don't use passwords now have more incentive to set one. I'd be pissed at any one of my friends who has a smart phone and all my personal info in his/her address book but doesn't bother to password protect it. The same person who complained loudest in this thread also said the reason he got a Bold is so he could do everything he does with a computer, only faster. If that's the truth, how can you not see the value in keeping your personal passwords, emails, and the contact info of all your friends safe?03-03-10 08:04 PMLike 0 - I think the reason he made the comment is because in 5.0.0.509 (actually, since at least .464), you need to set a password in order to make the keylock work. The point is, I LIKE the one handed unlock and get right to typing in a bind. My mute key sucks most of the time. And I don't understand why RIM doesn't want to give us the option. If RIM was trying to force everyone to set up a password, then they sure as **** would not take it away and allow you to hit the mute key to unlock the keyboard. It even CLEARLY says to hit the mute key to unlock it.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com03-04-10 12:12 AMLike 0 - And no I did not get a bold so I can do everything faster than everyone else, its my 6th year with BB and I've had my bold since the day it came to ATT. The reason I do not get another phone is because of its ease of use. Now, to me, its being made more difficult to use now with an added tedious step. One that, as far as I know, has never even been complained about. At least not on any forums that I've seen or reviews. Why would you want to merge 2 separate options like that and expect people just to adapt after they have been using that option for years (6 in my case, others with many years on me). What about the phones with both the mute key and lock button up top? Is that lock button useless? Why have 2 buttons that do the same thing? Why have 2 buttons and one is useless? It just doesn't make sense to merge the two to me. If people want to use standby and like the mute key, I see that. But what was the difference in unlocking the other way? Other than making people have to position the bold in their hand two different ways to make it useful. I have large hands, but I still have to move my hand to the top and reach over and press the mute, then slide my hand down and type/scroll
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com03-04-10 12:37 AMLike 0 - Do you use PayPal? Is it associated with any of the email addresses on your phone? Because anyone could reset your PayPal password and use it to buy whatever they wanted. Some forums (not this one thankfully) give the option to send you a password reminder via email. They're becoming less prevalent, but they're still out there. The idea is that only you know how to access your email account, so sending you a password via email is secure enough. So if they get one password you use, they'll try it everywhere. Are you telling me you NEVER use the same password in multiple places AND you store them all n your head? Doubt it. And let's say the thief can't find a site tat will just send a reminder, and they can only have resets sent instead. If someone has your phone, they have your email address, and they'll get your email even without knowing your email password... so anything they could request would be received, noted and deleted before you ever saw it.
And if any of your email accounts has a mobile site (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) they can go there to request a password reset, receive it via push, reset your password, and THEN lock you out of your email. Before you could catch them they could have password resets sent from all kinds of places to an email account you can no longer access. Have you ever bought an app from Mobihand? All I need is to be able to check the email address you used to buy them, and I can transfer all of your software licenses to a device you don't own. I could even use desktop manager to back up all your info in preparation for migrating to different phone, then put your phone back where I found it leaving you none the wiser. Then I restore the data to a fresh phone and I'm receiving all your email.
These are all just examples, and if you *really* don't think a thief will think of one of them, or something I didn't think of, it's still a moot point. My password CAN be entered one-handed, in less time (I guarantee this) than you can unlock with a mute key like the one you've got. My password protected phone is easier for me to unlock than your non-protected phone is for you, and my data is secure, yours isn't. We're talking maybe half a second, and I can do it with my eyes closed. Exactly what do you do for a living that a fraction of a second is too much time to spend unlocking your phone? It can take a day or two to get used to having a password, then you'll likely never notice it again.
BUT, suit yourself, don't use a password, and deal with a phone with no keyboard lock. Like I said, I love that this might actually be incentive for some people to stop thinking that there's nobody out there who can do scary things with what's stored on your phone. May you always be as lucky as you have been for 6 years.Last edited by digitalb0y; 03-04-10 at 01:04 AM.
03-04-10 12:53 AMLike 0 - My paypal is so screwed up it is on a different email and I'm pretty sure the last time I used it was with a card that expired 2 years ago at least. And anything with a credit card can be refuted and the card canceled. Also if anyone wants to steal my phone so they can have my $6 berry buzz license bring it on and good luck.
I'm not starting a flame war with you. But you have not given me one reason why they would take away the option and still leave the "stand-by mode like" feature. You have only given reasons to have a password. Which I clearly do not want to do so why bother? And yes, there is something I can do, go back to .411. Besides, I'm used to memory leak, I've had a bb for 6 years!
