I am thinking of buying a BlackBerry Storm 2 9550/9520, getting it unlocked for GSM, and using it on T-Mobile. One of my concerns, however, is that I travel to some pretty rural parts of Minnesota in the summer. If, for example, I needed to call 911 and I had absolutely NO GSM coverage, would the BlackBerry simply place the call on the CDMA side, or is it not quite that simple?

Yes it would. Every mobile phone is supposed to be able to call 911 regardless of it's network type no matter if the phone is locked, etc.

This is true, but is limited to the hardware in the phone. So the storm for example can place a call on both the CDMA network as well as a GSM network because it has both radios. Now a phone like the Pre is limited to the CDMA network only because it is lacking the GSM radio, and would be opposite for the iphone.
