Okay, first off, let me say that I am NOT using 3G or wifi. The wifi on my campus is screwy and since I'm in the sticks, there's no 3G. just EDGE.

I came from an 8900 and I've loaded up my 9700 with all my apps (plus some new ones) and I can't believe how FAST this phone is, even just on EDGE, compared to my 8900. There's no lag and it almost feels like I'm on 3G even though I'm not.

    I love this phone!

Yeah then I'll be even more hooked!! haha.

Seriously though, I'm doing fine right now with the EDGE, probably because I've never owned a 3G device AND have been in a 3G area. I guess I'm just blissfully unaware, haha.

don't try a Nexus then.... makes the BB feels like it's running on GPRS with a 100Mhz processor

Yeah I like the looks of the Nexus, but it's WAY too expensive for me. :P
    Again, no 3G here either.

Welcome to the 9700 family Artemis! What took you so long? (LOL)

Seriously, congrats on your new toy.

I'm not really finding that 3G is that big of an advantage. Some are reporting that the stock T-Mobile .330 OS isn't the best OS to maximize 3G speed. I'm contemplating trying a different OS to see if there is an improvement.

Keep us posted on your findings.

    Congrats again.

Haha thanks berryite It's great to be here!

I can't wait to try out 3G. As I said, there is no 3G here at college but when I go home, there is 3G in the city nearby. I will have to try it out then. Right now on EDGE though, wow, it feels REALLY fast!

It's my feeling that 3G will probably allow for faster video loading times and tethering...otherwise, we probably won't see too much of a difference otherwise. It's still nice to have though.

I've totally fallen in love with the trackpad. I had some initial reservations about it but I gotta tell ya, I now love the trackpad.

If you haven't done it yet, get Visual Voicemail. You'll love that too.

    Viva 9700!

    I. Love. The. Trackpad. I'm so glad that I don't have to worry about stuck trackballs anymore. I too worried about it at first but now I see that RIM really made a good choice about the trackpads on new BBs.

I'm not sure about VVM. I use YouMail for my voicemail and I use the VVM app that comes with it. Youmail is free and allows for call "ditching" (not letting certain contacts leave messages) and greater greeting personalization.

    Viva la 9700!

Ohh then I can't wait. I was using the Storm2 9520 for 3 months now, and I love it, but the typing experience (even though better than that of the 9500/9530) is still a little laggy. I'm a BIG messenger guy. I send TONS of messages and the keyboard on the 9520 sometimes lags and it bugs me a lot.... other than that it's a great device. I went to it from the Bold 9000 and I do feel like the screen is a huge upgrade, along with the camera and memory, but the actually BB experience isn't. So I'm jumping ship and grabbing the 9700 More memory, better camera like the 9520 series, and I get the KB. But I will miss the HUGE screen! it's awesome But I decided that typing messages and battery life is far more important than the screen size alone. Now reading this I am happy to see that everyone is happy happy happy with their 9700's!

Im lucky because I have wifi at home and the office. I dont have a very good 3G reception. I havent really tried it yet. If its as easy and quick as everything else on the 9700, then ill be even happier!

The 9700 is really fast. Not only loading web pages but working in applications is really fast and the performance of the 9700 is top notch. I remember with my trusty 8330 and 9000 I had random reboots all the time. It wasn't as bad with the 9000, but it still happened. It never happens with my 9700 and I have had it for a month. I was used to a random reboot ever other day if not everyday. And the 5.0 OS is so refined. I just don't get the unappreciation of those on this forum that want an OS overhaul. This OS is so great and seems so much more polished and smarter than any OS I have ever experienced.

What's the explanation for the perceived difference between 8900 and 9700 performance, aside from 3G I mean. The specs are just not that different to account for this kind of perception.

You should be comparing devices running the same OS or you're not seeing device-only differences.

when i tether, I average 300 KB/s (that's 2.4 mbps) on downloads... so the 9700's radio can cook, so if you can find workaround for the browser (viigo/3rd party browsers), it's definitely faast

The BB browser is notorious for being slow, no matter how fast the connection is.
My 9700 browser experience is indeed slower than my 8900 browser experience. I never stopped to consider that it was the 5.0 browser and not the 3G connection. I've been assuming that 3G is kinda a disappointment.

    Interesting observation. Thanks.
