I want to thank all of you for your advice and counsel. Having this forum to coem to was a comfort and made owning my 8900 a joy, even as I played with OS after OS. I have now been seduced by the 9700 and I am off to play in that forum. For anyone who cares, I have had the 9700 for a day now and it outshines my 8900 in every way. Faster for sure- running 5.0 on the 8900 was slow and locked up often- I have not seen that issue yet on the 9700. The battery life of the 9700 is amazing compared to the 8900, regardless of OS- I NEVER got 2 days out of my 8900. With the 9700, I am at 80% battery after a whole day.

After only one day with his new 9700, he considers it vastly superior to the 8900, huh? Let's wait until he's had it for a month or so, loads up the OS with his favorite memory-sucking apps, and see if he's still as impressed with the 9700's speed and battery life as compared to the 8900.

    I'm going to bet "no".

I'd like to get a 9700 myself, but I'll be waiting until later this year and maybe by then there will be a new device coming out. There's always something bigger and better around the corner.

    It doesn't do ANYTHING better.

    3G?

    Sooooo over rated.

    The 9700 is not GOD.

    Its got the same OS.

    Same stuff.

Worth $450 to upgrade with TMO?

    **** NO.

Theres nothing that makes the 9700 a groundbreaking device.

People that say it is are absolutely wrong.

Is the 8900 old and tired?

    ALL BLACKBERRY DEVICES are.

RIM has not done ANYTHING revolutionary in the past year friends.

    Yes.

    Guess what?

So is the 9700, I have one in my hands now, its an 8900 with a pretty battery cover. Wow!

    Um, ok.

    Keep beliving that.

The 9700 is hardly that much better than the 8900.

    I have both.

    Seriously, everyone wants the latest.

    Yes, the 9700 is prettier.

But who cares, I cover mine up anyway!

    The trackpad sucks!

    Gimme my ball.

3G on TMO is not spectacular.

    I've done many tests. MANY.

Do I sound like a hater?

    Maybe?

People that are calmouring over their 9700 saying its the most amazing BB ever blah blah blah are sort of stupid. Same OS, same functionality NOTHING NEW!

I have both in my hands, and THERE IS HARDLY any difference between them!

The trackpad is horrible for games, try Pacman on it!

Anyhoo, again, I'm sick of people saying the 9700 is such a superior amazing device.

TMO 9700 = 8900 with a trackpad and pretty battery cover.

    Thats IT.

Actually, the browser on my 8900 seemed faster.

I got mine for $129 through TMO. Would it be worth $400? No. Is it better than my 8900? Yes. My battery life on all the OS's I tried on the 8900 was always poor- never more than a day and a half or so of use. The 9700 so far is better for me based on: 1. battery life is vastly better- I use it as much as my 8900 and the battery life after 1 day is still over 80%. 2. Response time is much faster and lockups are not happening on 5.0.0.### OS and 3. 3G is nice- not necessary or earth shattering, but nice. As an aside, I already loaded all the same apps I had before. Your mileage may vary and the objects in your mirror may be closer than they appear, but for me this phone is an improvement.

The 9700 is definately a better device than the 8900 but it is wayy overrated. I think that a perfectly working trackball would be nicer than the trackpad, I don't like the trackpad that much. The battery is a HUGE improvement though. 3G is nice but edge is still servicable and not as bad as people make it seem. Other than the 3G,trackpad,and battery, there isn't much change. You still have a great device in the 8900. They both still have a high res screen, 3.2mp camera, gps, and wifi. IMO the 9700 isn't the right upgrade from an 8900 right now just because they're bacically the same phone(upgrading from an 8320,pearl,WE,or flip would make the most sence) ill probably just wait for the next new blackberry.

The 9700 is vastlay overrated for sure. I recently upgraded to a 9000 and preffer the trackball to a pad. I am thinking about upgrading my wife's 8310 to and 8900 which I am sure she will belighted with. I also think 3g is overrated and not needed by me. I have my 9000set on 2g or EDGE which increased my battery life to almost 3 days of moderate use.

Wait and watch my friends and mark my words, the market for used TMO 8900s will skyrocket in the next 90 days now that they're discontinued. I'm never wrong.

I'm not saying the 9700 is a steaming pile of puppy poo, I'm just saying that its silly to say its a rolls royce and the 8900 is a lexus etc.

I'm so sick of all the bogus love for the 9700. Its nothing new! If it was groundbreaking I'd friggen buy one. Luckily my company just gave us 1000 of them so I can see for myself that excessive 9700 love is pure blind juvenile hype.

If you can afford throwing away 400 bucks for it, then sure why not.

If you use WiFi alot then 3G means nothing for you.

3G on a BB is bogus hype.

You aren't playing Doom for chrstsakes, you're getting emails and browsing non intense web pages. Wifi has been proven by large groups of nerds in India to be quicker than 3G in many instances.

    Don't believe the 9700 hype.

    Its not worth it.

The trackpad is a fail for me, I think people that bought the 9700 are afraid to admit its not as great as the hype.

I really enjoy my 9700...was worth the 129 but NO way I would pay more.

I really like it but no, I wouldn't say that it's THE BEST THING EVER.
I like the trackpad. OS feels snappy..but then again, my 8900 was too. I can't use 3G since there is none in my area.

Soo...basically just a trackpad and better battery life. But I still like it.
I also prefer the keyboard..not as "clicky" as the 8900.

Cool, its a bummer that the trackball is being phased out.

I think alot of people will cling to their 8900 for another year.

For $120 to go from anything but a 8900 is definitely worth it.

.461 on the 8900 is the BEST 8900 yet.

The different between 8900 and 9700 is not much, same processor, same memory, same screen size, same resolution, 9700 is a little bit bigger than the curve one (well bold were always bigger than the curve one). 9700 support 3g network, but 8900 support FIPS validation, 9700 doesnt seem to support that. Battery life on 9700 is 30 min more than the 8900.

I'm staying with my 8900 for now, specially since rogers doesn't support uma via wifi on 3g device yet.

I wonder though, what all the people with multiple trackball failures might say about the trackpad. Having suffered through one of my own, I would like to try it out. But not for a signifigant amount of money. The 3g might be cool, if T-mobile supported it well. The 3-g coverage map says it blankets Houston. Yeah, no. It's spotty at best.
