Now I have one friend who works for Verizon and says it doesn't use text messages and another that says it strictly uses data.

I have a BlackBerry 8330 for Verizon and idk if I want to activate it, I use IM apps all the time, all day long

anyway, I was told and confirmed this on the Verizon site, that IM uses a text message, now, I would get the 500 text plan, so I wouldn't have to pay for unlimited, because I normally dont need it

so, does it use data or a text message each time I send an IM?

If you download the Mobile IM program that came on your 8330 (which includes AIM, YIM,MSN) or from the VZW apps, messages are billed as text.

If you download YIM, AIM, MSN, Google Talk, etc from the BlackBerry App World, the messages are billed as data.
