Just got the defender today for the 9700 and I was using the communter before that. For sure it is bulky and yes, its a hummer of a case. Built wise, it is solid as a tank and well made. I am really digging this case. I dont have large hands but the size makes it feel very secured when holding it.
I used to have the defender for the 8900 and I loved it, especially the keyboard protector, considering what I do for a living, it gives me peace of mind. Obviously the keys are quite different on the 9700 so I'm wondering, how does the key protector fit on it? Are the keys and trackpad still easy to type with?

I just got it and a bit upset that it renders the charging pod useless (unless I want to disassemble this thing every night) but ultimately I will feel a hundred times more comfortable using the device at my job which is full of dust, rain, and situations that make dropping more likely to happen. Maybe I'll try the drive over test tonight with a 40000 lb trailer.

is it wrong I dont like the bulkyness of the defender? I like just the naked phone ha but i guess ill be the sorry one when my phone is dropped and hit by a mack truck
does the middle ridge get in the way with using the trackpad?
a little when moving upwards, but not that bad. it is something i can get used too.. a trade off for having a soild case. The side ridge can get in the way for the side keys, this is something that the communter did not have as an issue with. Despite this, this will still going to be my everyday case for the 9700
unless i was working construction or something i dont think i could ever use that case, its so big and bulky and looks like you need a crowbar just to get at it.

I am glad I got this, I feel very comfortable using the device at my job now. I like the impact protection and especially the keys being covered but usable. But in all honesty, it's bulky, clumsy, and ugly. I am sure I can get use to it but I only need this five days a week. It's like a suit of armor, and I feel like if I keep taking it off every Saturday and putting it back on every Monday, I'll cause wear & tear to the parts of the case and it won't hold together as well. So yes, unless you're taking this daily to a harsh work environment, stick with the commuter.
