CDMA channel different from wife's - can this be changed?
- My wife and I have identical Storm 9530's with Verizon. After checking to see we had the same PRL versions (which we do), I noticed we have different CDMA channels - she has 589, I have 507. Since day 1, her phone has had slightly better reception and signals than mine. Can I somehow change my CDMA channel to hers? Does the CDMA channel make a difference?

You don't mention "bars", but in any case, bars are utterly meaningless for comparing reception, especially on CDMA phones. For the first part, there is no standardized correlation between the signal strength and the number of bars; the number of bars is whatever the software in a given phone decides to display. Secondly, with the CDMA protocol used by VZW, signal strength itself is largely irrelevant, since many calls share the same frequency at the same time; what is much more important is the signal-to-noise ratio, which allows the phone to pick your call from all the others on the same frequency. And this measure is usually buried in some engineering service menu somewhere. "Bars" are a feel-good thing that are on phones because, well, people expect their cell phones to display bars. In the old analog days, signal strength actually meant something, but not any more. The only reliable way for the average person to compare how well phones perform as a phone is to simply try to make calls on both phones in the same place and same time and see how well they complete and hold calls.12-30-09 08:08 PMLike 0
