Why does the keyboard change to multitap when entering passwords on the internet? I have my portrait keyboard set to SureType and it works with the browser with the exception of passwords.

Because passwords do not have to be words, or may require specific capitalization. If you use SureType, your password would probably get auto-corrected. Unless, of course, you add it into your custom dictionary (which would not be brilliant).
Therefore, RIM determined that multitap works for passwords in the portrait view of the browser. It's the same with the Storm 1 on 5.0.0.x
