I used Advanced Backup because I don't want 3rd Party Apps transferred (I get the feeling they don't always transfer the right way - probably just me). But you "should" be able to use Device Switch Wizard. If I'm correct, Desktop Manager will make any changes it needs due to differences in Device Software (i.e. 4.7 to 5.0).

When you plug in the old BB, do you take the SIM out? When do you put the SIM in the new 9700? Thanks.

I used the device switch wizard with no problem. The device
switch wizard doesn't transfer 3rd party apps.

You can use DSW or you can just restore from a backup made from the previous device. 6 of one, half dozen of another.

You can take the SIM out of the old device before using the transfer wizard.

No matter if your sim card is in your old phone or not in it, don't put it in the
new phone until after you've done the transfer. This way your BBM contacts
are pushed your new PIN without you having to re-add them. Then simply go
to your BIS and change your device PIN and you're good to go.
