trust me, some people would give up a battery and alot of other things for a faster processor. but it is scheduled to be released by the end of the year.

pardon the ignorant question, and there may not be an actual answer for this, but does the "Passion" have a physical keyboard, or will it be a basically an Eris with better specs (roughly)?

No physical keyboard, virtual only, with trackball. Think of a turbocharged Eris with a bigger/better screen.

Are you serious? The speed of the Passion will be easily detected and will be noticably faster than the Droid. A faster processor makes the OS run smoothly and stay flowing seemlessly.

We won't know till the Passion comes out. The Passion may not be running at 1 GHZ due to battery consumption issues, and might be underclocked, like the Droid's 550 MHZ processor (rated for 600 MHZ).

Also, the snapdragon doesn't have a GPU, the Droid does. One can only speculate on the Passion vs. Droid performance.
