I have noticed quite a few posts on the bluetooth disconnect issues. I recently purchased a Curve from VZW. I have been a Windows Mobile user for awhile and got sick and tired of having to do a hard reset everyday. So, I jumped on the BB bandwagon and am stoked to do so.

Now to my issue, I have a Motorola HFW-8000 handsfree car kit. When I first paired the device with my phone it worked flawlessly. However, once I turn my car off and back on again, the car kit and the phone appear as if they are connected but it does not work. I have tried everything from re-pairing, taking the battery out, ensuring the LED light is on, encryption disabled, discoverable on, etc... still not working.

I am bummed because I really love the phone but the bluetooth issue might force me to return it. I live in California and they have passed a law that goes into effect on 7/01/08 that requires all drivers to use a handsfree device.

So if anyone has any solutions please let me know. I want to avoid returning my phone and going back to my Moto Q.

    Thank you in advance

    Device Info:

    8330 Curve
    OS v4.3.0.127
    Bluetooth version 1.1

Sounds like it may be the car kit.

I wish it was but unfortunately my two other phones connected without any issues. I sure hope RIM comes out with a fix sooner rather than later.

I have a bb curve 8310 and just purchased a motorola S9 stereo headset to listen to my music. I checked it at the store before i purchased it to make sure it worked. after a short charge on the battery we checked it, sounded great! then stopped due to dead battery right? after full two hour charge, wireless phone works but music does not. Popup says waiting on S9 but never answers. Is it broke already or is there a trick to it?

I have tried both trusted, prompt, and no. Once I turn off the car and back on again, the connection is damaged. Both the car kit and phone show that they are paired but when I get a call, it comes through the phone and not the car kit.

You may be able to change Echo Control to something other than automatic. Turn it off. At this point it is more guessing which you seem to have done a pretty good job testing anything that was configurable.

Bottom Line is the Motorola HFW-8000 has been around for around 4 years now and bluetooth is a moving target, meaning it has been updated a few times. So probably you are out of luck unfortunately because the 8330 is pretty much a new phone. You can either get a bluetooth headset, which can be pretty cheap (I paid 35 bucks for mine), contact Motorola but doubt they will be able to help because the HFW-8000 is no longer sold, or go back to one of your older phones.

I am not sure where you got the Bluetooth version information from in your original post. I could not find that information in my 8830. Bluetooth versions run from 1.0, 1.0B, 1.1, 1.2, 2.0 & 2.1. Versions 2.0, 2.1 & 1.2 are supposed to be backwardly compatible to 1.1 which was establish around 2002. But from looking at the posts around here, that may not always be the case.

    Good Luck

I appreciate the info. As for the Bluetooth Version, I went to options>about if you scroll down you will see Micro Edition Bluetooth Version: 1.1

Question, do you know of any compatible hardwired bluetooth car kits that work with the 8330? I live in California and they have passed a law that goes into effect on 7/1/08 that states all cell phone users must have a handsfree device when driving. I do have a bluetooth headset Motorola HS850. It has worked flawlessly. However, I have gotten accustom to the car kit because it mutes my stereo whenever I get/make a call. So if you have any recommendations and know of any hardwired bluetooth car kits that you know work with the 8330, please send em my way.

    Once again,

    Thanks JC

Interesting. Not listed in the About screen at all on the 8830.

Wish I could help. Search the web and see what pops up, somebody has to sell something that works. I know the Kenwood BT-200 does NOT work with Blackberries. There is a post here about. May have to get used to hitting the mute button on the radio unfortunately. If there is something electronic that is useful to have in the car I have it but I have stuck with the headsets. More portable. You have an HS850 so California is safe (thought that law was already in effect?). If you find something that works drop in and post it here to let us know.

Here is the info from CA DMV about the law:
Two new laws dealing with the use of wireless telephones while driving go into effect July 1, 2008. Below is a list of Frequently Asked Questions concerning these new laws.

Q: When do the new wireless telephone laws take effect?
A: The new laws take effect July 1, 2008.

Q: What is the difference between the two laws?
A: The first prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle, (Vehicle Code (VC) 23123). Motorists 18 and over may use a "hands-free device." Drivers under the age of 18 may NOT use a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle (VC 23124).

Q: What if I need to use my telephone during an emergency, and I do not have a "hands-free" device?
A: The law allows a driver to use a wireless telephone to make emergency calls to a law enforcement agency, a medical provider, the fire department, or other emergency services agency.

Q: What are the fines(s) if Im convicted?
A: The base fine for the FIRST offense is $20 and $50 for subsequent convictions. With the addition of penalty assessments, the fines can be more than triple the base fine amount.

Q: Will I receive a point on my driver license if Im convicted for a violation of the wireless telephone law?
A: No. The violation is a reportable offense, however, DMV will not assign a violation point.

Q: Will the conviction appear on my driving record?
A: Yes, but the violation point will not be added.

Q: Will there be a grace period when motorists will only get a warning?
A: No. The law becomes effective July 1, 2008. Whether a citation is issued is always at the discretion of the officer based upon his or her determination of the most appropriate remedy for the situation.

Q: Are passengers affected by this law?
A: No. This law only applies to the person driving a motor vehicle.

Q: Do these laws apply to out-of-state drivers whose home states do not have such laws?
    A: Yes.

Q: Can I be pulled over by a law enforcement officer for using my handheld wireless telephone?
A: Yes. A law enforcement officer can pull you over just for this infraction.

Q: What if my phone has a push-to-talk feature, can I use that?
A: No. The law does provide an exception for those operating a commercial motor truck or truck tractor (excluding pickups), implements of husbandry, farm vehicle or tow truck, to use a two-way radio operated by a push-to-talk feature. However, a push-to-talk feature attached to a hands-free ear piece or other hands-free device is acceptable.

Q: What other exceptions are there?
A: Operators of an authorized emergency vehicle during the course of employment are exempt, as are those motorists operating a vehicle on private property.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    DRIVERS 18 AND OVER

Drivers 18 and over will be allowed to use a "hands-free" device to talk on their wireless telephone while driving. The following FAQs apply to those motorists 18 and over.

Q: Does the new hands-free law prohibit you from dialing a wireless telephone while driving or just talking on it?
A: The new law does not prohibit dialing, but drivers are strongly urged not to dial while driving.

Q: Will it be legal to use a Bluetooth or other earpiece?
A: Yes, however you cannot have BOTH ears covered.

Q: Does the new "hands-free" law allow you to use the speaker phone function of your wireless telephone while driving?
    A: Yes.

Q: Does the new hands-free law allow drivers 18 and over to text message while driving?
A: The law does not specifically prohibit that, but an officer can pull over and issue a citation to a driver of any age if, in the officers opinion, the driver was distracted and not operating the vehicle safely. Sending text messages while driving is unsafe at any speed and is strongly discouraged.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    DRIVERS UNDER 18

Q: Am I allowed to use my wireless telephone "hands-free?"
A: No. Drivers under the age of 18 may not use a wireless telephone, pager, laptop or any other electronic communication or mobile services device to speak or text while driving in any manner, even "hands-free." EXCEPTION: Permitted in emergency situations to call police, fire or medical authorities (VC 23124).

Q: Why is the law stricter for provisional drivers?
A: Statistics show that teen drivers are more likely than older drivers to be involved in crashes because they lack driving experience and tend to take greater risks. Teen drivers are vulnerable to driving distractions such as talking with passengers, eating or drinking, and talking or texting on wireless devices, which increase the chance of getting involved in serious vehicle crashes.

Q: Can my parents give me permission to allow me to use my wireless telephone while driving?
A: No. The only exception is an emergency situation that requires you to call a law enforcement agency, a health care provider, the fire department or other emergency agency entity.

Q: Does the law apply to me if Im an emancipated minor?
A: Yes. The restriction applies to all licensed drivers who are under the age of 18.

Q: If I have my parent(s) or someone age 25 years or older in the car with me, may I use my wireless telephone while driving?
A: No. You may only use your wireless telephone in an emergency situation.

Q: Will the restriction appear on my provisional license?
    A: No.

Q: May I use the hands-free feature while driving if my car has the feature built in?
A: No. The law prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from using any type of wireless device while driving, except in an emergency situation.

Q: Can a law enforcement officer stop me for using my "hands-free" device while driving?
A: For drivers under the age of 18, this is considered a SECONDARY violation meaning that a law enforcement officer may cite you for using a "hands-free" wireless device if you were pulled over for another violation. However, the prohibition against using a handheld wireless device while driving is a PRIMARY violation for which a law enforcement officer can pull you over.

The two laws were the result of SB 1613 and SB 33, authored by Assemblyman Joe Simitian and signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in September 2006.

I sympathize with users above. However, I have a new Verizon 8330 and a Motorola S9 that I use to listen to music and internet radio on my bicycle on my way to work. Few small problems (the headset does not control the Curve music controls, too much buffering) but overall works fine. Volume works fine.

I also use a Parrot MK6100 in my Audi and it pairs with Curve fine. Interestingly, I am frustrated because I DO NOT like voice dialing as implemented. the Parrot will store voice print and worked great but now it won't work, defaults to curve which has poor accuracy. Other than that works well.

sjsdoc, when you get into your car and turn the key on, does it automatically pair and play your calls over the speakers flawlessly? I have a Moto HFW 8000 and I have to manually connect/pair from the phone in order to work which is a pain in the @$$. I just need a handsfree kit that works flawlessly with the 8330 Curve. I didn't think I would have as many issues I am having.

Yes, it automatically pairs. It does not auto-answer. But you can press the green button on the steering wheel and it will. No manual connection necessary. I had a BB 8703e which was better in that it had no voice dialing so the Parrot did it all and worked better. However, this is 'good enough for government work'. It also plays music and audible books through the Parrot.

I have a pioneer stereo with their bluetooth kit and it works fine, but it was a pain setting up. The problem you descibe is similar to the problem I had. Mine would not automatclly connect after I set it up. The reason was that on the pioneer kit, it is designed so you can have several phones connected at the SAME time. Most hf kits are 1 phone 1 connection. So when setting up the pioneer, there is an extra step. You have to "register" the phone with the kit. This was done in a sub menu, and was not obvios at first I would suggest reading the car kit manual to see if they have something similar.good luck

Wow, I'm surprised Arnold was a little behind on that one huh? In NY we've had this law for like 2 years now (except of course for police, they're allowed to do whatever they feel like!).
Now I'm curious what states have this and what don't. I'm gonna go search....

Washington State law goes into effect either June or July. I THINK it is a secondary offense - meaning you have to be stopped for another violation,

Kinda figured you'd have to replace it. Glad to see you kept your BB and updated your car kit. Surprised you did not go with the IHF1000.

The only reason I went with the older one was because I got it for free. I may upgrade to the 1000 in the future but I just wanted try this one out before I invested anymore money into a motorola kit.
