I gotta say, I'm getting SUPER pumped at the prospect of having ACTUAL competition for the FIRST TIME EVER in the Canadian Communications Industry!

Never, in the history of the country have there ever been more than 2 direct competitors in any market segment of the Communications industry.

And now we're at the precipice of having 2.5 National HSPA networks AND 2 more regional HSPA networks!

We might actually stop getting GOUGED by Robers!

I personally don't care as I see two possible outcomes.

    1) The big 3 absorb them real quick.

    2) The new ones grow and expand, and so does their need for a revenue stream so they raise prices after offering low low prices and get a lot of subscribers.

Seen it before across many industries over the years, so I'm not holding my breath.

ummm...how can telus and bell be absorbed by themselves?

and prices will come down because of competition...
what industry examples have u seen where more companies have come along and the prices have went up...
this post makes no sense at all...

Competition is a good thing. But Telus will find a way to provide worse service than rogers.

From my experience Rogers may be pricey(no more so than Telus) but at least they allow me to use every feature of my phone without trying to charge insane rates for it.

a guy at Telus told me since they're gearing up for the Olympics(here in Vancouver) they'll be ready to compete with Rogers ... and HSPA will be out the same time the Storm 2 is released as well

It does make sense...it didn't say that Telus and Bell will be absorbed by themselves, it means that Rogers/Bell/Telus will absorb the new ones. They will start up, get a good base of clients and then sell to one of the "big 3". I think that was even stated by one of the new companies that that was their plan.

I'm not sure that Bell and Telus offering us the ability to buy the iPhone (and their ability to therefore generate additional income over other smartphone's data usage) can be considered 'competition'.

Meanwhile, the newcomers - those that survive the Big 3's efforts to kill them off before they begin - will need to piggyback on Bell, Telus or Rogers networks to be national, so 'competition' there might be whatever they allow the newbies to be.

    Tingly? What, like food poisoning?

Yes, I meant that Bell/Telus/Rogers will eventually absorb the new guys. Look at Fido for example, Rogers bought them.

I actually like Rogers, and I hope to stay with them
I'm just sick of the gradual and continuous cash grab.
Rogers has had a LOT of freedom over these last years, since they were the only HSPA network. If you wanted the best selection of phones and REAL Wireless high speed you've had no choice.
Telus is as bad or WORSE than Rogers. They price grab WITHOUT the benefits of the Rogers network.
And I'll NEVER go back to Telus since a "Customer Retention Specialist" laughed at me (a customer of 5 years!)

But having Bellus, Dave, Wind, AND Rogers all compete for me and the SIX phones on my accounts (2 of which are BlackBerries) gives me a REAL happy feeling.

How will you make them compete? I usually just look at the plans from all 3 once in a while to see what the best deal is.

It would be nice for them to compete for service. Can people just call in and get a good deal? I see many different stories, good and bad from people trying to get good deals with retentions, and that most of the time, you have to be lucky and get a good rep that will actually want to help you out, and has some authority to make changes.

This XMAS there will be a FIRESALE of phones.. I know this for a fact. HUP's are allegedly gonna be completely different... i.e., much more compelling than ever before to jump ship..

    allegedly.

Yes, but right now, there isn't a fair competition. Bellus is still stuck with CDMA/EvDO for now, so they have a BIG disadvantage already. As a result a straight comparison of price plans isn't a complete picture.

I'll be making a call to retentions in a couple months, once people start jumping ship and Rogers is desperate. I have 2 accounts totaling 6 phones with them, and I'm looking at add one more phone/account.
I figure my $350 monthly bill should help me get a good deal.

Got a source? I hope this works out, as I have to upgrade 3 of my 6 phones... *sigh*...

Rogers will laugh at you and say see ya! Unless you have a business account or corp account, Rogers does not care about you.

Fact of the matter is, your leaving has already been accounted for.

Rogers has not shown any worry in regards to new carriers or new services being offered by Bell / Telus, you are a # to Rogers and they know that most people (like all carriers know) when a long term customer leaves, they typically return back to the carrier in which they left within 6 months.

Aside from that, Rogers has already earned back what they "spent" on you within the first year. If it's more financially viable to let you go then it is too keep you then they will. I've done retentions for AT&T and know all too well the logistics of it.

And honestly, for 6 line on Rogers, your bills should be higher then $350, I had a minimum of 3 @ well over $500/mnth and Rogers was ready and willing to let me walk all over $60 they refused to credit on my account.
