AT&T really has bad service, traveling with 3G
- I have had my bold since day 1 in chicago. It has never really worked that well. All bold users I know experience the same issues, dropped calls when switching from 3G to EDGE and as of recently 3G goes out alot in Chicago.
AT&T SERVICE SUCKS, THAT IS ALL IT IS
I am traveling and in Europe was on Orange and did not have one problem. Not one call drop, consistent data loading, constant full 3G
I am now in Israel on cellcom and OMG, I swear we are being cheated in the US with AT&T. My phone has operated to well here is it beyong belief. Reliable data, reliable voice, always have a full 3G signal.
This makes me think if it almost worth it to switch the Verion world phone with 3G. My friends who have BB on verizon never have problems.
I swear AT&T forgot about all BB users when the IPhone came out and now they just work at dealing with the iphones data issues and not the rest of us.
ONCE AGAIN, AMAZED HOW WELL MY AT&T BOLD WORKS ON FOREIGN NETWORKS!09-28-09 04:16 AMLike 0 - 09-28-09 10:08 PMLike 0
- Verizon has a much larger 3G network and an overall larger voice coverage area, I would recommend going to either them or Sprint. AT&T really needs to work on their network, I have traveled all over the US with both AT&T and Verizon, its not even a competition. Verizon creams them.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com09-29-09 08:44 AMLike 0 - I travel quite a bit, and I have a Verizon work phone and my Bold is my personal phone. The AT&T coverage is much better than Verizon in the areas I travel. The only exception is inside concrete/steel buildings. That isn't a network issue so much as the differences between GSM and CDMA.
@ OP: I have heard others having issues in Chicago, but it is not as simple as saying AT&T is bad. Some locations just have more problems than others. As technology advances and matures (think 4G/LTE), networks will become standardized, commoditized, and non-issues.
As for the international coverage, this has been discussed extensively.
- Many (most?) European countries and Israel have government subsidized networks
- All of these nations are much smaller than the U.S. both geographically and population wise
- Many developing nations (e.g. in southeast Asia) didn't have the massive infrastructure of landline technology already in place, so it was easy for them to become early adopters of cellular technologies (especially with heavy government subsidies)
That said, the U.S. definitely has some catching up to do wrt mobile technology.09-29-09 09:03 PMLike 0 - I travel quite a bit, and I have a Verizon work phone and my Bold is my personal phone. we may not be the first in technology, but our voice/data plans here are the one to be jealous with. a regional carrier would be as big as a national carrier in Europe. Its interestng when people come over from outside the US, they are surprised that if someone lives in California on a national plan they are still domestic when they go to New York. In Europe thats like going from France to Poland and keeping domestic rates. Our data networks have the backbone to handle intense internet traffic09-29-09 09:25 PMLike 0 - When I'm back home in Houston, AT&T is usually reliable. Up here in Cleveland, I have dropped calls all the time.09-30-09 11:20 AMLike 0
- It drives me crazy when people post things like this. If the service sucks cancel it and move on. I always utilize the 30 day policy most carriers have before I commit to a service. When people post that either Verizon or AT&T have bad service it makes me think of my sons teenage friends who compare the PS3 to the Xbox 360. Both do the same thing just a little differently and whatever one you have always seems to be a little better than the other.
For me I like AT&T because I get a sweet discount through work. I also get good service where I travel to most. For me its a win-win.09-30-09 11:43 AMLike 0 - Also, in the US... the FCC limits the power that can be put to a tower. They are capable of much much more - stronger signals that travel farther, but the FCC screws us. In Europe and Canada there is no FCC. I'm not surprised one bit that it works better in other countries. High 5 FCC.09-30-09 10:17 PMLike 0
- AT T has always had terrible reception in the Chicago area. My friends who use AT T for their work phones have had the same problem as the OP. They have to move around the apartment to get better reception sometimes. Sorta ridiculous in the middle of the third largest city in the country. With similar problems in NYC, I'd say AT T has some work to do...
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com10-09-09 02:32 AMLike 0 - I used to have the same issue on my bold switching constantly between 2G and 3G.
Then I upgraded my OS and it all went away. 4.6.0.167 sucked!
Any other versions above has much better reception, and OS 5.0 rocks!!!
Also, I got a replacement Bold under warranty 2 weeks ago, still came with the same sucky old version!!!
Upgrade your OS... Beta or Official, the reception will be much better!10-11-09 07:54 PMLike 0 - This is sort of shocking to hear since I plan to leave Sprint for AT&T very soon.
My Sprint EVDO 3G coverage is fast and good... WHEN i get it! That's my main gripe since I got a BB with Sprint last year. It's terrible inside homes and buildings. And it's pointless to have 1X voice only coverage with a BB. In my area there isn't enough consistent EVDO coverage.
My dad has AT&T (Razr 2 V9) and gets flawless coverage, even inside steel/concrete buildings and homes where I get nothing or voice only roaming! That's why I want to move to AT&T.10-12-09 04:27 AMLike 0 - AT&T in NYC is truely awful. The US, generally, has poor wireless svc. compared with much of the world. My BBerry works much better in the Hong Kong subway than it does in NYC, Chicago, and most anywhere else in the US. That said,AT&T's network svc. in NYC and Chicago (in my experience) is horrible & infuriating. Using the BBerry 9000 on AT&T's network in NYC is as frustrating as driving a Porche in crosstown traffic (not that I have a Porche - or any car - but...)
What does the AT&T rep say about the NYC subscriber complaints - any ackowledgement - any idea(s) about the probability of improvement - any specific AT&T plans for improved network hardware/ software?10-13-09 09:42 AMLike 0 - Personally, where I live AT&T provides better coverage than all else. I originally switched to Verizon from Cell One about 4 years ago because they had put a tower up in my little itty bitty town. When their person-to-person service sucked and coverage picked up for AT&T I switched to them. I have no problems with the EDGE network here (we don't have 3G) and it's a toss up around here who gets service between Verizon and AT&T. Like someone else said, it all just depends on where you're at. We have a corporate Verizon store here in town that you can't even get service inside of. Now how's that for service?10-13-09 01:23 PMLike 0
