My phone was constantly jumping down to 1X when i first got it. Now it doesnt as much, but once in a while it jumps down to 1X for like 2 minutes at a time. Its annoying. Is there something wrong with my phone. I feel like i should exchange it. Does this happen to other people?

I noticed this on my phone as well. Called technical support. they had me dial *22899. Seems better after doing that.

*22899 is nothing more than *228 opt 1, *22899 should not be used on phones. It meant to program and update modems and air cards as they cannot be dialed.

The switch from 1X to 1XEV can be- depends on coverage and area, can also be device dependant. I have the tour and curve, they both do this and I know it is the my area. When I am at work I do not have the problem.

ive never noticed this problem with my old phone, however it wasnt a smart phone so it never caught my attention by interrupting my data. I'm just afraid if i exchange it i will get a worse one, cause this one works very well otherwise. However, if there is something really wrong with it, then i definitely want to exchange

all i know is that it seems to have worked. i didn't have the jumping around issue with my 8830. And I've only used the tour in clear 1XEV territory.

I am on my second tour and both have had the same problem. I have concluded that this blackberry just does not receive the cell signal as strongly as others or is set to kick down to 1X at a higher threshold. I have held my tour side by side with my old 8830 and my friend's curve and both had one bar higher and both were on 1XEV when the tour was only on 1X. When I move to a stronger signal area, it is on 1XEV the entire time, however. I spoke with a verizon rep, who had me type ##000000 from the call screen. It pulled up a menu and I scrolled down to SIP password and typed in VZW. The phone reset. The rep explained to me that this forced the tour to join the 1XEV network, which is exactly what it did even though before i did this it was on 1X. Unfortunately doing this has not cured the problem permanently, in the same location it still hops around between 1X and 1XEV although it seems to do it less often.

When I had my 8830 in Asia (China, HK, and Taiwan), which has both CDMA/1X/GSM networks, locking the network technology prevented the phone from draining itself from "hunting" for available networks...but here in the US, it wont do anything (our SIM cards look for 900/1800MHz towers), but I leave it on 1XEV anyways.

My wifes curve has never shown lower than three bars of 1XEV coverage at our house. My many storms (five I think) spent almost half the time on 1X. My tour spends about 25% of the time on 1X at our house. I dont think its your phone but just the new BB's in general.

I turned on my phone this morning and was 1X with 5 bars. I did the *228 opt.1 and now im back up to 1XEV with 4-5 bars. Give it a whorl.

it was suggested in another post that to go into options ---> Mobile Network ---> go into the full menu ---> select update profile and then once that is done select update preferred list. Once I followed these instructions, I have not left the 1XEV signal strength and the bars are definately more stable. I might just work for you.

My signal only seems to jump from 1XEV to 1X in certain locations, or when atmospheric conditions are not optimal. Otherwise, my Tour pretty much stays locked on 3-5 bars at 1XEV.

mine doesnt do this too often. sometimes it goes 1XEV to 1xev then to 1X but comes right back to 1XEV. It only drops when I am in walmart. my old phone always used to get no service in there, but the tour always has two bars in the back. that works for me.

will *22899 hurt my phone if i do it? i noticed my tour jumping from 1x to 1xEV and its not fun when i cant use data or im in the middle of using data...

i also did *228 options 1 and 2 and entered vzw as my SIP password. that didnt seem to work and i have it changed to 1XEV from global.
although when i go back into ##000000 i noticed my sip password isnt there anymore?

i did the *22899 thing on my phone to try it. it didn't hurt it. Seemed to make the signal go crazy though from 1x to 1XEV and back a lot. THen i did *228 then 2 and it seemed to be back to normal. Still having the occasional problem with jumping down. Do you guys think i should replace it. Everything thing else works great so i don't want to get one thats worse. But if i can solve the problem by getting a new phone then i would rather do that.

My Tour randomly drops to 1X, sometimes it randomly drops to no service.

My Curve never had this issue.

Both my original and my replacement Tour do this.

    *228 hasn't helped.

I've heard it's a software issue, and hopefully that's true and they will fix it in the next update.
