But are there other ways of snapping a pic of a bar code that will send me to other websites, like a 3rd party app? or is BBM the only way of doing the barcode snap?

It uses your camera as a scanner, pretty cool I believe. Its been pretty much standard tech for Asian countries (Korea/Japan/China). I'm led to believe BBM obtained this feature due to the fact that the Bold is sold in Japan as well. I see this as a great opportunity for RIM to implement this "new" feature for other uses, with BBM being the first. Hopefully more apps will appear the use this.

Yeah, people in Japan actually see this as no big deal, as they've been using this type of system to pay bills all the time, and at convienence stores buy stuff, etc etc.

We'll catch up eventually.

Microsoft has been trying to push this technology out to the general public for like two or three years now, and have stated that in some games, they're thinking about being in a level and a barcode being placed somewhere, and you can scan it off your screen and be taken to a website with a "hint" about the level, or maybe a downloadable extra, or unlock something, etc etc.
They said they want it to be part of the fun, not an annoying break from the game.

It's easier to use, and it's just neat. In all reality it's no big deal. It saves all of 2 minutes of typing an entry in. But gosh darnit, don't ruin our fun!!!!

Its all appeal fun and games now! But think about the potential usage for it. Business cards ? Advertisements ? Pretty neat stuff..

... on the other hand people you have become a bar code and you dont even know it lol ... might as well tattoo it on the back of your neck...

The bar code is generated using your BlackBerry's PIN and your name so it's unique to each BlackBerry.

I was playing around with a barcode maker someone posted (I'll send the link when I get home). its pretty cool. You can use the barcode to direct you to a site, auto call someone when you scan it, and it you use the text feature, when you scan it, it'll pop up what ever text you put.
So there's a lot more to the barcode than just bbm. Pretty cool I must say
