I don't know about the app, but last night an email to my gmail showed up on my berry before it did on my computer, though that could have been chrome's problem

The gmail app isn't push. I don't remember how often it is, but it checks for the mail, it isn't automatically sent.

Gmail app (from what I've been told) checks every 20 minutes while inactive and every 5 minutes while you are actually in the program.

As has been stated, the gmail app is not push and "looks" for email occasionally, I don't know the duration cause I don't use it. You may also want to check to see if your set up via a POP or IMAP email.

My understanding is that it refreshes every 30 minutes. You can go in and tell it to refresh whenever you want it to, but if you don't, you will get emails (on average) 15 minutes late.

Yeah, the Gmail app is slower. But I use it for free MMS since it will show "aspx" picture formats and my BlackBerry email won't.

Yeah, I think it's much better than the native email client, even though it's not as immediate. It just works much more smoothly, imo, and I don't have anything important enough going on for me to trip if emails come through 15 minutes late.

I have mine setup to come directly to my device and I have the new mail notification disabled in the Gmail app. This way, if its just text and regular pictures, I just view it through the regular BB menu. But if its an MMS with an aspx format picture, I just open up the Gmail app to view it. Best of both worlds.

I only use the GMail app to search or read archived mail.

You'd have to be pretty stupid to not use the gmail app, imo.
