I have just purchased a Curve 8330 on Bell Mobility (Canada). I am so frustrated with the limitation of only being able to send up to 140 characters in a text message (SMS).

Does anyone out there know how to send more then 140 characters in a SMS?

i would say pins are the best but they dont work for me, when im overseas with my data plan turned off, my sms just keeps going though, i have sent like 7 texts as one before( seriously at one time, the charcter count went to 0 and then started again at 140, like page 2 of the same text, but my phone registers it as 7 texts not just one

Sadly that is the thing with Verizon and some other companies. There is a reason due to transmission with the towers or something. I read something about it but I couldn't find it. No way around it.

SMS is limited to 160 (not 140) characters because it occupies the same space as the messages used by carriers to communicate with their cell phone towers. It is immutable :-) MMS does not have ths limitation, but obviously the recipient has to have MMS activated to receive MMS. Some carriers/devices offer "enhanced" SMS texting whereby messages longer than 160 characters are sent as separate messages.

Ive pretty much gotten used to always sending my txt messages via MMS just incase I get a little verbose and hit that 160 character limit in SMS messaging. Until Sprint recently released an OS update finally supporting MMS, the only time I would really use SMS was when messaging friends on Sprint.

I just make all my friends get BlackBerrys, then use BlackBerry Messenger and bypass the SMS limitations! :-)

Ya I find the 140 limit a pain too. I had a 8310 on rogers and it would automaticly start a second text. I think you could sent 6 at a time. Don't know why the 8330 is so different.

Well thats better than Alltel! It stops you at 160 and doesn't even break it into 2 messages for you! IF you go over you have to copy/paste into a new MMS.

SMS messages are limited to 256 bytes. This is standard for all SMS all over the world. The actual length of the SMS is determined by data encoding, 7 bit yields 160 characters, 8 bit yields 140 characters. Some phones one some carriers allow collating of messages, where the phone will automatically break up the message into the appropriate number of SMS messages and put it back together, but this is not an industry standard by any means and doesn't affect the 256 byte limit in any way.

I thought it was the curve that created the limit by not allowing bigger messages. Before the curve, I had an LG phone with my verizon plan and could happily send long messages.

I just find it strange that a device as versatile as the BB should impose a limit that most other cell phones don't.

As I said before, the 256 byte limit is not a Curve thing. It's not a BlackBerry thing. It's an industry standard.

Doesn't anybody read the whole thread anymore? :-) These issues are explained earlier - SMS is limited to 160 characters (not 140) by the carrier's technology. Some carriers/devices have special abilities that support longer strings by automatically separating them into 160-character segments.

aerophage is correct all the way around. blackberries are known as business devices. and by them limitiing the device to 160 characters its keeping the "sms" name for what its designed for. on other phones, when you send a message above 160 characters, it falls into another branch.....EMS. it stands for enhanced messages service. this service is only carrier specific and end up getting cut off if sent to a user on another network. if your typing more than 160 characters on a regular basis i suggest two options....call them with ur four sentences or contact ur service provider for the phone's email address...such as verizon's email adress for phones is "[email protected]"

i hope this helps or at least makes u a text expert.

SMS is limited to 160 characters for CDMA networks and 140 for GSM networks. MMS is limited to 1000 characters. if you send to email such as "[email protected], still 160 character limit. Still looking to see if there is limit for BBM or Pin to Pin.

I wont go with the guys who claim that sms is limited to 160 characters. off late I changed my handset from curve 8300 to 8900. On my 8300 i did never face any problem in receiving / sending sms no matter how big they are without being spilit up in parts. But on 8900 i am facing the same problem with an unchanged network operator / tel no.
    Any idea.
