For 4.5.0.133 see this thread - http://forums.crackberry.com/f61/4-5...8830-a-166674/ Its available via unconventional methods.

Revised: When I originally posted this procedure, there had not been a production release of 4.5 code for the 8830 and some people had questioned if there would ever be a production release. The last two public beta releases, .77 apps/.101 apps, were fraught with issues. So it made sense to attempt try the "melding" operation so we could possibly have a better functioning beta product. However, now that RIM/Bell Mobilty have released the 4.5 production code, it no longer makes sense to do a meld. I would suggest that if you haven't performed the meld operation below - don't bother.

If you have already performed the melding operation, you can do a standard install of the Bell .127 code on top of the meld. DM will detect the .127 code as a downgrade and allow you to install it.

If you want to stick with the .131 code you should still install the Bell .127 code to the desktop and then copy the .131 cod files to the .127 Java directory and DM will detect the the melded .131/.127 code as an upgrade. This is what I did. But I have a high risk tolerance and can usually find my way out of most computing problems that I've created.

I originally did this as a proof-of-concept in order to have a working full-screen video streaming capability and 16GB SD card support.

This entails a blackberry melding operation - combining the 3.4.0.20 OS platform from the 8830 4.5.0.127 distribution with the 8330 4.5.0.131 distribution. These production releases are available on RIM's web site.

CAUTION - The below procedure should only be attempted by techies.

For the adventurous among you here's how it's done:

[I've added step 0 for advanced users].

    0) Add the windows registry values specified at the end of this post if and only if you have experience with registry tweaks - otherwise skip this step and go to step 1. With these values, a log will be created every time the loader is invoked. When you complete the upgrade, please inspect the log. I have found the log file to be both an indispensable troubleshooting tool and educational resource. Let me know what you think.

    1) Install the 4.5.0.127 8830 distribution to the desktop

1a) Install the 4.5.0.127 device software to your 8830 (not absolutely necessary, but recommended)

(If you are already running the 4.5.0.127 apps on your 8830 you you would start from step 2)

    2) Install the 4.5.0.131 8330 distribution to the desktop

    3) Create a new directory under 8830-v4.5.0.127_P3.4.0.20 and name it Java2

Your directory tree should now look like this:

    8830-v4.5.0.127_P3.4.0.20
    CDMA
    Java
    Java2

    4) Copy all the 8830 Java directory files to Java2 (for backup/recovery)

    5) Copy all the 8330 Java directory files to the 8830 Java directory and allow overwrite.

At this stage the 8830 Java directory includes all of the 8330 4.5.0.131 cod files and these additional 4.5.0.127 cod's which remain from the initial 8830 desktop install performed in step 1.

    net_rim_tcp_options.cod
    net_rim_se13nettable.cod
    net_rim_bb_simphonebook.cod
    net_rim_bb_addressbook_simapp.cod
    net_rim_bb_help_cdma_gprs__en.cod
    net_rim_bb_help_wizard_images_8800.cod
    net_rim_bb_medialoader_ringtones_8830.cod

Don't worry about the cod's that don't apply (camera, video, etc). The loader logic will key off of the 8830 ALX files and prevent them from being installed.

    6) Invoke Desktop Manager or Loader from the command line to execute the upgrade.

Verbose logging is always useful - create or modify these two entries in registry under the Loader key

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader
    CFPLogLevel 0x6 dword
    RetainLog 0x1 dword

With these two values added, a verbose log will be created in your temp directory.

I have a related question. I have been using the 8330 SprintTV application
on my 8830 and it works perfectly but I am sure it is an older version than
what you have. First, could you tell me what version of SprintTV you have
with .131? second is it easy to get it out of .131 for 8330. Does it come
    as a .jad file?
    Thanks

I'm running 4.5.0.131 on my 8830 using the publicly available software with no significant issues.

I did this as a proof-of-concept in order to have a working full-screen video streaming capability and 16GB SD card support.

This entailed a blackberry melding operation - combining the 3.4.0.7 OS platform from the 8830 4.5.0.101 distribution with the 8330 4.5.0.131 distribution.

The details can be found in my post on the beta section of another forum, however, I have given myself permission to reproduce my post here.

this sounds amazing and apparently it works quite well! kudos to you sciencerules! i have been wanting to upgrade my os from 4.2 to .131 on my 8830 so badly, so when i saw your post i was extremely excited! however, while reading your directions i came across one tiny ( and by tiny, i mean HUGE) problem... i do not know how to do ANYTHING you are talking about! i was lost at step # 3...create a java directory ? and everything after that just sounds like gibberish to me. i must say i am extremely envious of you and all the other that were able to successfully complete this "melding operation." I guess I will just have to settle for downloading .101 ...those directions seem manageable to me

If you are running MobiTV 1.5.2 you should be ok.

The .131 upgrade should have no bearing on SprintTV. Just make sure you select it during the upgrade process or follow your own instructions.

There is no link for my upgrade. It's based on the presumption that the following two releases are currently available since they have been previously linked at multiple sites.

    1) 8330uAMEA_PBr4.5.0_rel188_PL3.4.0.25_A4.5.0.131

    2) 8830uAMEA_PBr4.5.0_rel138_PL3.4.0.7_A4.5.0.101

    bparisi,

If you install .101 successfully, that would bring you to step 2.

This procedure was geared to folks with an IT background. If you don't have any techno-geek friends or family who can assist you, hold off on this. I haven't received enough feedback yet to recommend this procedure to the community.

I think the only downside I have found is 4.5.0.131/101 take sup about 2MB more space than 4.2, even without Docs-To-Go loaded. That's not a huge issue for me, and it seems to work a lot better with the memory available (doesn't slow down as quickly when memory drops).

I'm still getting used to the differences between 4.2 and this setup of 4.5, but from what I have experienced, it was well worth the upgrade. I think the combination of .101 and .131 makes for a good setup.

I jusst did this, and it seems to work. I had to wipe out it first, and connect through bluetooth, for some reason USB was not working. It came up, and everything restored sucessfully.

I have no idea yet what are the actual improvements or problems.

The big things I notice with the upgrade is the media player, the web browser, and memory management. There is also the voice recorder application that ties into the media player.

You can stream YouTube videos as well as streaming media (like using Orb).

The web browser seems a lot more responsive, even though I don't notice a huge change in visual perfomance. I like how the cursor responds in the browser comapred to 4.2.

The other thing i noticed is that the 8830 seems to work better (than with 4.2) when memory drops below 10MB. With the number of apps I have installed, I start off with 13MB on a reboot, and seem to run solidly with 8-9MB free. If I tried this with 4.2, I would see the hourglass pop up and pretty much have to do a battery pull.

I must attest that this option for an upgrade solution by "ScienceRules" does work. I have been contemplating ever since his post was made, now I could not be more happier. Upgrade successfully without and error after installing and rebooting, more than 12mb free. I do have a few applications well install.
I must say my device is showing:
    smartphone (GPRS,CMDA)
    v4.5.0.131 (Platform 3.4.0.7)
    Cryptographic Kernel v3.8.5.32a
For all those who miss the full screen use of media player, its is resolver after upgrade.
As for other problem and full test I will have to wait until I get back into the country (US).

Only draw back is...the registry edit can be confusing for those who are not a techie....
    *****DO AT URE OWN RISK*******
Those who are not tech friendly follow these step to modify ure windows registry.
    Windows XP users
Click on "Start" in the lower left hand corner
    Click on "RUN"
Type "Regedit" in the open box, choose "ok" or hit "enter key"
Click the plus sign beside "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" then "Software"...and the same for each additional directory that follows.
Make sure the loader folder is slected and right click in the right pane, choose "new>"- "DWORD Value" to create the additional entries.

    RetainLog 0x1 dword"

So is it a reasonable assumption that this technique would work for any 8330 release being shoehorned onto an 8830? No guarantees of course that something device specific doesn't find its way in there at some point, but in theory it should be ok?

Its a reasonable assumption that it could work.

The 4.5.0.131 apps were meant to be run on the 3.4.0.25 platform as we see from the filename -

    8330uAMEA_PBr4.5.0_rel188_PL3.4.0.25_A4.5.0.131.

However, there would be no way to determine if the .131 apps would run on top of our 3.4.0.7 platform and produce desirable results until we tested it out.
