    here's the scenario:
i stored one contact number on my BB as
    ABC: 09171234567

if I receive a text from this number, on the message list, it only shows up as number (not recognized as ABC). If I receive a call, it shows up as ABC.

    vice versa

if I store ABC as +639171234567, on my message list, ABC is recognized but during call, it shows up as 09171234567. I find it weird.

Your contact is most likely restricting their number from others. Check with them and see if this is the case. If not, then I am lost.

I have the same issue. I have the contact saved in my address book but when I receive a call from someone, half the time it only shows the number and not the name and number. However, when I go back into the call log, the name is there. Any ideas? I'm using an AT&T 8310 with OS 4.2.2.170

Hey I think I figured it out. If you go into this path Options>Security Options>General Settings then scroll down to "Content Protection". If you have content protection enabled you have to change the "Include Address Book" field to NO otherwise when your phone is locked it will "protect the content" of your phone and not show the name of person calling you regardless of if they're in your address book. Hope that helps.

    Following has worked for me.

    1. Go to Call Log
    2. Select menu there
    3. Select options
    4. Go to smart dialing
    5. Make sure country code is the right one, e.g. for uk it should be +44

    Good Luck

Had the same problem, however theres is one more step that worked for me
after you change the country code
if it still doesnt work change the number length to reflect how many numbers that a local number has, excluding (0) at the beginning.

This is what worked for me as I still had the same problem even after changing the country code.

OK - so here's what I have experienced.

My boss's bold 9700 was recognizing contacts when they called him but not when they text'd him - or at least some did and some didn't. My BB mobile number was in his address book as +44 0000 000000 - so with + and with spaces in between some of the numbers. When I sent a test text/SMS to him it didn't recognize me, but when I edited my details in his phone to remove the spaces it did...

I had the same problem! What I found out is if my phone was locked that is when it happened. I experimented and that is how I figured it out. Try it lock your phone have someone call you only shows #. Unlock it shows contact name then. I don't know how to change it but JSJOHN might have the fix. This happened to me on OS 4.5.0.175. Now that I'm running 5.0 it doesn't.

    Guys,

I tried all the above and none of them seems to be working. Few days ago I met someone who mentioned that you need to update you OS version but there is a chance of data loss.

Can someone please help me sort it out?

    Device: BB 9700
    v 5.0.0.351 (Platform 5.1.0.98)

I experience the problem with my new 9700 (didn't have it with my 8320). SMS messages only displayed the number not name, but when opening the message and hitting menu, you would get E-mail, Call, etc by ACTUAL name.

T-Mobile said that this a bug that they hope BlackBerry resolves soon, but the workaround listed is to strip all formatting from all contact #'s ie (555) 123-4567 should be entered in as 5551234567. This works... problem is, that I synch all my contacts with Outlook which forces contact numbers BACK into (555) 123-4567 format.

So I have to either override Outlooks formatting or wait for a fix.

This problem is due to content protection. Its has 3 levels, Strong, stronger, strongest, just play with it a little till it fits your needs. I got mine on strong no need to shell this thing up like CIA files are stored on it.

I have a 9700, had the same issues where some where in the sms, the number of a contact shows and not the name, just going in to the contact name edit the number with no spaces or +, or 1. then save and it will display the name when you go back to the sms app. i am Not sure why it freaks out on some numbers and not others, but this fixes it every time!

After 3 years and probably 167 drops, the display on my trusty 8100 Pearl went all black (phone still worked) - I suppose 168 was just 1 too many So I just upgraded to the 9700 and have the same sms name display problem. I edited 1 contact to strip out all the non numerics from the phone number and that one displays OK. I am NOT about to edit 756 contact entries to eliminate the non numeric characters. PLEASE - does somebody have a fix???

I seem to have 2 more issues with SMS messages on my 9700:

    1) I have the SMS message conversation style set to "Stripes" (not Bubbles). In the SMS message list displays as Stripes, but the date/time seems to show when I last accessed that message rather than the date/time received.

    2) Also, when I click on a message, the messages displays as Bubbles with the cursor somewhere in an old message. I have to look hard to find the new message. Any suggestions?

I don't know why nobody noticed that jsjohn already had the answer to the problem. I had the same issue with my contacts and his answer solved it perfectly. And that was 2008. Thank you jsjohn!

Explanation: The protection involves hiding the name of the contact who's calling while the phone contacts are protected. So nobody can figure out who's calling until you typed in the protection code.

There are three levels: Strongest / Stronger / Strong. You can also turn encryption of contacts off.
My contact names (on Bold 9700) will only show up when I turn encryption of contacts off.

I had to make 2 changes to fix - this worked for me:

    1. Set country code
    2. Set number length to 10

I'm in the UK on Orange.
