Like the title says, what does unlocking do? I am on ATT data plan, I can connect @ home and @ work via wireless router. But I just don't get it? I know I sound really dumb but hey I've reading and didn't see it. Thanks.

Man, you guys are yanking the OP's chain pretty hard!
You can use on another network. This is good if you do not want to use AT&T or want to use a different carrier when going out of the US. That's it, it does not unlock any special applications or options. Sometime unlocking is confused with jailbreaking, like the iPhone.
