I have a crimson 8310 from AT&T. I ordered my G1 trackball today and I'm wondering if swapping the oem for the G1 is as easy has pulling off the silver ring and popping the old out and putting in the G1? I'm kinda a newb, I've disassembled some motorolas and nokias but I'm a little weary of harming my precious blackberry! Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's just the G1 trackball. It takes literally 1 minute to install it. There is three pins at 3, 6, 9 0'clock. Pry from the bottom and work your way around. Take the ball out and put the other one it. Easy as that...
How durable is this trackball? Meaning like does it press in a lot before you actually click it? Or is it "strong" like where is doesn't press down a lot before you click it?

What's the difference between the g1 and the regular trackball?

The enclosure and design of the trackball is the same, one is white and one is black. The G1 guts of the trackball are identicle to the BB guts. All you need is the BB trackball ring and you can use either, although there are WHT BB trackballs for $6 vs $10 for the G1 BLK trackball.

that's what I thought but wasn't sure. I ordered a black trackball from cnn. Looks great with the all black housing.

Great news, just to see, I pulled the ring off earlier but I couldn't get the ball and assembly out but I didn't try too hard. Just turned it over and nothing, snapped the ring back on and went back to work! Lol

the ball assembly is magnetic, so it takes a little effort to get it out.
I just orderd a black one from cnn.cn, hope its better than the one i got now, its jumpy for some reason and it sticks occationally. figured i would go ahead and order one before it completely dies
I use the same tiny flat-head screwdriver to remove the ring as the one i use to tighten my glasses. Whatever you do though, don't use a knife or anything sharp, that's just daft.
