    Good day,

I am just new to this website. I just bought a new 8830 to use in China. I arrived here last night and it does not work?

Can anyone tell me what i need to do to get the 8830 to work in China.

My carrier Sasktel put a sim card in and it was suppose to work in China! but it does not.

If your carrier is Verizon, the phone must be unlocked to use a different SIM card other than their global card. Good luck.

A couple of things about China.....

I'm on Verizon and it's a company phone. My account has to be changed to support "outside the USA" coverage when (you guessed it) I go outside the USA coverage.

There is no way to read Chinese characters on the 8830 at this time other than to pay for a package on a monthly basis. I hope you are not going to get (or try and reply to) e-mail with the Chinese character set. They show up as small black squares.....

    Good Luck...

If you have a Sprint phone, you need to manually change the phone to GSM.

    Hi Holdhard,
Is there anything new with Chinese Character support for BB8830? Just thought you may know something new. Thanks for any info.

There was a trade delegation from Saskatchewan that had the same trouble in Bejing. SaskTel suggests you call directly @ 1-800-667-6870 (24/7) so they can trouble shoot issue.

The recommendation is that you call support from Bejing and they will ask you to manually set the data network to “GSM” and run testing from that point.

    1. Set the Network Mode to GSM.
Note: If you manually select a network (GSM mode and manual), you
may find that device logged in to one network for Data and another for
Voice, leaving you with email (data services), but no SMS or Voice. The
risk is that as soon as you move to a different location, you may lose all
service, for this reason Manual Selection is not recommended. If set to
GSM, ensure it is NOT set to Manual - Automatic only.
    a. Press Menu
    b. Scroll to Options then click the Trackball.
    c. Scroll down to Mobile Network then click the Trackball.
    d. Scroll to Network Mode( It will still be set to Global mode.) then
    click the Trackball.
    e. Scroll up to GSM then Click the Trackball.
    f. Scroll up to Network Selection Mode, it will currently read
    Automatic then click the Trackball.
    g. Scroll down to Manual. Device will display “Please wait scanning for
    available networks:”
    h. When complete, Scroll down to reveal all available networks that
are partners with Vodaphone. If none are seen, either you are out
of coverage completely or the device has a hardware issue. You
should see 3 – 4 networks with the preferred one at the top of the
list. The list of networks will change as you move from country to
    country.

    2. If you see a list, but still have “Searching for GSM” displayed, try
    forcing a registration.
    a. Scroll down to the next available network.
    b. Press Menu
    c. Scroll to Select Network then click the Trackball.
    d. Device will display “Please wait. Switching to desired network”.
    e. Then if successful “Network selection Succeeded”. This may
succeed, you may have Voice and/or SMS service, but possibly not
    Data services(BlackBerry Mail/Messenger/PIN, etc).

Following these steps did not work in our case but perhaps it was only a problem in Bejing.
