Sure buy an unlocked one on ebay but you're going to pay a hefty price

Buy an unlocked phone, but you probably won't get it for the retail price as it is from an actual carrier. Maybe at least 100 or more.

If AT&T really does de-commit from its 2G network then an 8900 on AT&T might not be such a great idea.

As long as the OP doesn't expect to keep the 8900 for a long time, it should be OK. The 2G network isn't going to disappear overnight.

I am looking at my current 8310 as a device just to get me through until the next wave of smaller form factor (Curve-like) 3G devices are released (6-12 months), at which time I am hoping that AT&T's 3G network will be improved.

That is a great thing you have to take into consideration. You might wanna wait till the 9220 comes out for AT&T.

I doubt att will do that, and if they do it will take a year before you seriously can tell.

You guys seriously think that AT&T is going to get rid of their 2G network and tell all its users that don't have 3G phones to **** off? Don't think so.

No, not in those exact words. But that's basically exactly what they've just done by switching EDGE users to 1900.

I have had a Rogers 8900 on AT&T for about 3 weeks now and it works great. AT&T isn't going to get rid of their 2G network anytime in the next 12-18 months, and let's face it people, the next new BlackBerry Right Angle 10,000 model will be out by then and we'll all upgrade... right?
