    So I went to bed at 8pm last nite and my battery was at 53%. Woke up at 230AM and my phone was off because the battery had died. Any idea what could have happened? I had closed all the app windows and put my phone face down like I do every nite

    I just tried what you did. On a soft surface the phone seems to go to sleep, but on a hard one, the screen was still "awake" minutes after putting the phone face down. The track pad might be picking up small vibrations and assuming it's you thereby keeping the phone alive.
    Try sleeping the phone before putting face down.
