    Hey everybody,

Just letting folks know that whoever has unlimited data plans should turn off the Binge on feature because it throttles your data. If you notice your Internet or data speeds going slow, I suggest you go into your mytmobile account and disable that feature because it'll slow you down significantly.

I was having issues with surfing and updating app speeds, so I decided to call T-Mobile so they can address my issue seeming I don't need Binge because I have unlimited data. They switched me to another tower and told me it should be fixed. That didn't fix it. I went into my account and noticed Binge On was activated, so once I deactivated that feature, my Internet speeds went back to normal.
Just letting folks know about that T-Mobile trick that is very sneaky and unfair.

I'm still on an Even More+ plan from years ago. Is this something I'd have to look into?

You must have been suffering a long time. The stupid binge "service" must be two months old.

I download "Democracy Now" daily. I noticed the download got very slow, though the video itself wasn't reduced. So binge effects downloads, not just streams. Also my "single tower " problem started a bit before binge went into effect. TMobile was a bit nasty about my complaints, as in "we aren't going to upgrade your tower", to which I replied "Just make it work like it used to." I wasted hours on trying to figure out what was screwing up my service. I pinned it down to TLS enabled websites and in yet another customer service session, I outright accused them of deep packet inspection. That was denied, but you can't do binge without packet sniffing.

I just checked and BingeOn was turned on. Turned it Off and I'll see if it improves my laggy speeds lately. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you're noticing your download speeds reduce to levels you're not accustomed to, I would definitely go manually remove Binge on. It's accessible in the T-Mobile app, or just visit http://www.t-mobile.com/
and login on the top right hand corner. Once you login, there's an option in your account to disable Binge on.

Exactly, it effects more than just streaming quality. It slows down download speed and Internet surfing. Opening pages on the Internet felt like 2G/3G speeds.
My Google Play Store updates would takes at least 30 minutes.
The thing that gets is why would automatically activate Binge On to an account that has an unlimited data plan. If I had a plan with a specific amount of GB's then I'll understand the logic, but applying those settings on my line only interrupted my streaming and download potentials.

I think binge on works with tethering, which is not unlimited. I'm on Harbor Mobile, so I didn't get the bump from 5Gbytes tether to 15Gbytes.

I'm kind of surprised Tmo hasn't tried to poach the Harbor Mobile customers since Harbor dumped Tmo for AT$T.

Some short codes you can "call" from the dialer:

    #263# Turn BO off
    #266# Turn BO on
#264# Check status of BO (on/off)

    https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4041

This is a per-line "feature" so if you have a family plan, you'll have to turn it off for each line, individually.

Maybe Harbor's AT&T customer base isn't big enough to care about.

Does TMO postpaid/branded or unbranded prepaid even offer anything that would entice Harbor's AT&T customers to switch?

You can't compare AT$T to Tmobile. AT$T is a bunch of jerks the have lot of towers and crappy plans. Tmo plans are cheaper (though not as much as they used to be), data speed is better, but towers.....well.....;-)

I caught a lot of grief on Reddit claiming 20Mbps is all you need on a phone. Most severs throttle to 8Mbps, just to keep all the clients happy. (You don't want somebody to hog all the the bandwidth.) Don't even get me started on those advertisements that show up way later than the text on the page, making the screen move on your phone. That is so annoying.

I can go into details on server tuning, but basically AT$T is all the speed you need. If Cricket actually gave me 8Mbps instead of 500k, I'd be there. Well maybe 1Mbps with a tail wind.

Oh wow, thanks for the heads up.

I turned my BingeOn off as well, definitely improves network quality vs when on. I prefer streaming torrents over using mainstream streaming services anyways... Plus I'm WiFi connected most of the time anyways and have a mobile Hotspot device to piggy back off of if the data gets crazy. Technically 2 mobile Hotspot as I also roll 2 lines deep and can always use line 2's data if in a pinch as well... It never gets that serious though, usually the mobile Hotspot device is enough... BingeOn is a shiny gimmick for those who require such frivolous features, not at all a useful feature IMO... If people only knew what they were giving up when they think they are getting more SMH...

I never deactivated my Binge On. As for packet sniffing... What do you think John Legere wants to steal your accounts for porn? I get a kick out of these conspiracy theorists.

How do you explain this then:

The second major finding in our tests is that T-Mobile is throttling video downloads even when the filename and HTTP headers (specifically the Content-Type) indicate the file is not a video file.

I pay for my packets. They are mine. There is no need for John Legere to do deep packet inspection on my packets.

This has nothing to do with conspiracy theories. I hope some day you can figure out the difference.
