You can't profit from the email-client nor BBM without BIS.
Rather try Q5 (cheap) to get BB10-OS that does not require BIS for the Hub and BBM.

Surfing the Internet and mobile web pages is possible though.

    BlackBerry|Q10, SQN100-3, OS 10.3.2.2639; BlackBerry|Passport, SQW100-1, OS 10.3.1.2480

    Why you don't recommend to him buying a 9900 - he already has a BB10 phone Z10?

Without BIS you can use whatsapp without problems, to have email you need to get LogicMail, Facebook, Twitter, etc will work only via Wi-Fi.

Gee, I dunno, maybe because it's the closest thing to a museum piece without being shackled to BIS?

BIS gives you BBM, email via native app, lets say YouTube if you are clever.

Without BIS with normal data plan using LogicMail you have good email client, you can use GPS navigation, e.g. Wisepilot, YouTube, also almost every app can work with normal data plan(without Facebook, Twitter, etc. - by wi-fi they work) - the last very important advantage is possibility to use it as mobile hot spot! Whatsapp works without BIS.

I have had for the last 2 month Bold 9900 without BIS and I survive!
BUt I was back to BIS because I love the 9900 design as a phone and the BBOS as a system. Also I have via BIS unlimited radio app In my country created by one of BlackBerry fan iin Poland. And I can watch youtube videos - almost every in HTML5.

I was using BB10 also on Z3 by 2 months, but I don't like the touch screen system design and navigation - its too big.

So, let the Bolds live forever!

Believe it or not ... but there are still people out there who need the basic functionality of a BBOS phone and BIS is a good thing because it keeps their phone (data) bill down.

Yes, such people do still exist!
