Does anyone know if the 30$ 5gb high-speed plan, exclusively available to new subscribers through Walmart, is compatible with legacy devices? I have an old T-Mo locked 9900 that I'd love to get running on the cheap, but not sure if BIS is an option on this plan. Thanks.

I believe BIS is an additional ($10) add-on. It's free on plans $50 and higher.

Is BIS even available on any Tmob prepaid plan? I thought those were mutually exclusive.

I used the 9900 on that plan around two years ago and it was an additional $10/month for BIS service. You should be able to add the BIS plan online once you register for a My T-Mobile account. You can also call in to the customer service reps, but I wonder how many of them are even familiar with BIS plan add-ons at this time.

It looks like there were two versions of the 9900, each with slightly different frequences (BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 - Full phone specifications). I'm currently in Chicago, where it looks like the impending frequency shutdown you've linked to has already occurred. Does either of these model variants still continue to fully function, or are they both useless (/limited to 2g) at this point?

Right. AWS vs. non-AWS was how phones were made, and TMO got the latter type (this was a little before TMO's UMTS 1900 network went big.) But now, you'll have to look at it market by market to figure out which type will suit you better. You could get on an UMTS with either, or you get be stuck catching 2G as well.

I recently switched to T-mobile's $30 plan (and a Blackberry), and BIS was an available addon (at, indeed, $10/month) when setting up the account.

I'm not saying it would for instance actually work, but I could have checked the box and I bet they would have charged me another $10/month for it.

I set up the $10 extra when I signed up for the $30 plan. Even though I dust off the 9900 every month for a day or so, BIS still works.
