Sort of, they are not limiting your amount of data, just what rate the much leeches can suck from the system. I would have soft limited at 10GB myself. The loss of 2 or 3 percent to other carriers that don't have any better would be of no concern to me.

This is a carrier that lives by the subscriber count. They're losing money nearly every quarter and the justification has been "but they're gaining customers!" If customers go, it would be pretty grim.

Verizon, on the other hand, made it clear that they're willing to let customers walk, and it won't hurt them as bad. Their sub count is almost double TMO's.

20 * 1024 = 20,480. It's probably 20.5 in reality and being rounded up to 21 for conversational purposes.

Good question. I can think of two possible reasons:

-Previously, they had set the limit at more than "97% of what all customers use in a given month." Vague. Now they've put a number to it. Correct or not (i.e. based on the current average, or also tempering for projected customer growth right now,) I don't know.

-21GB also happens to be their highest offered data tier that you can pay for. Of course, practically nobody would get it because a) there was unlimited and b) it cost more than unlimited.

Most everyone is misinterpreting this. All they're saying is when their network is at stress, these uber users will be the first to get slowed down UNTIL THE NETWORK CONGESTION alleviates.

They are NOT saying that unlimited data means you can only get 21gig of fast data each month

They are not going to stop advertising them as "truly unlimited" plans though, are they--even at least in the markets that are slammed enough to be doing this? And they're adding what...1.1 million customers a quarter?

And the FCC has made its position clear. So fair "prioritization" or evil "throttling," one complaint is enough to get the ball rolling on a ton of headaches.
