Hey guys,

It seems pretty obvious to me, but apparently not to blackberry. One of the biggest power users is the radio.

Over the past 2 days, I set my Q10 to use only "2G" network. Usually at the end of the day I usually have 5 to 20% battery remaining (sometimes it dies at 15%), but with the 2G settings I have 50%+ left. 2G is not ideal, it's enough for email, bbm and whatsapp, but when you want to use gmaps, or browse the Internet it's super slow.

The battery saving mode is great, but I feel like it's missing the option to set phone to 2G mode. In this way, I would still have my communications going, but would also be able to "live" another half a day or more on the 30% (where is my limit).

What do you guys think?

I suspect that idea would not occur to many users. I couldn't even work with 3G, personally.

My carrier doesn't even support 2G. Only 3 and 4 (3.5 realistically).

So for me personally, that would be both pointless and non-functioning.

I've suppose I've got the option of using 2G here with Rogers in Ontario, Canada, but I personally wouldn't be able to stand it, not after using LTE and 4G for so long with BB10!

Back on my BlackBerry Torch 9800/9810 and Bold 9900, I used it occasionally to fortify my connection (if 3G or HSPA+ would jump in and out of range). For the type of content that I use on the internet (and a majority of BlackBerry users I'd assume), that connection speed just wouldn't cut it! I suppose if it was dire that your phone stayed on and you only needed basic internet that could work, but seeing as those situations are far and few inbetween, it would be a case-by-case scenario where you could fix it yourself.

I get where your coming from and I suppose it would be good if BlackBerry added a few more options into the battery saving mode to select what band your phone should use.

In conclusion, for a majority of their users, the Enterprise ones for sure, forcing 2G mode would NOT be a good idea though.

I would love that option as well actually, but the reason they didn't, I'd bet you, is because some control-freak carriers like AT&T and Verizon block those settings from being available when their SIM/service is activated in the device. With the aforementioned carriers, all you can do is turn data on/off, and roaming on/off/prompt. I think they even block the manual scanning.

In no way does 2G = better battery life... just turn off the data and you'll atleast get texts and calls on battery saver

It really depends on how good the network is. Living in Saudi Arabia for the past 4 years, putting my phone on 2G makes a significant improvement in battery life. With significant, I'm talking about 5-6 hours additional time than if I had it on 4G and the goes without any usage and the phone simply being on standby.

However, as of late, the carriers seem to be getting their their stuff together and the battery consumption gap between 2G and 4G is closing down, and because of this I stopped switching back and forth between the two.

But I would still love an option to be able to downgrade to 2G in battery saving mode.

I have the option of 2G in my Z30. I guess this option is dependent on the network service provider. I have noticed most north American network providers doesn�t give you the 2G option only on blackberry

Actually it does depending on the network. If your network has a Base 2G signal coverage of let's say 98%, 3G coverage of 75% and 4G coverage of 55% then by setting your device to 2G it won't constantly be jumping between signals and also won't be using extra battery power to boost the signal to connect onto the fringe of the the higher speed signals.

Why Blackberry? Because I can!

Well, there is a 2G option on the passport but unfortunately telus doesn't have a 2g GSM network. I find the battery saving mode more than adequate though.

Apparently it's all dependent on your carrier. For example in Africa, you can't have "2G" only. There is only an option for "2G + 3G" so I have it on that all the time.

Simply because when I put it on "4G + LTE-A". Battery life drops heavily.

3G vs. LTE is again another story... haven't tried it, but I assume there is a difference in battery usages as well. I would personally love the opportunity of setting the network mode in the battery saving.

The option makes absolutely no sense if the option to turn off data is there.... which would save even more battery life.

It does make sense. How are you supposed to send an email or bbm with data turned off with no wifi? I think they should include the option for 2g only in battery saving mode.

I believe some wireless providers are turning this option off, that allows us to choose the network type.
I contacted my wireless provider couple of months ago, the tier one support had no clue as usual.
2g and GPRS is more than enough for my emails. And would save battery life.

My understanding is, that the 3g connections spawn multiple radio links with the towers, there by draining the battery.

Because 2G is not even an option in many modern countries. If you want to use data stay on 3g/4g
