Depends on what apps you use.

I get notifications for Waze, Kik, Candy Crush, my Synology apps, Kobo, etc, etc.

I am one of those who downgraded the Android runtime to enable Spotify album covers. Don't have notifications now. I did when I installed 10.3.1.2267 with autoloader. Not sure if changing the runtime back to 10.3.1.191? would bring back notifications, but I kind of like to see my Spotify albums

Google Play apps would use the GCM (Google Cloud Messaging) service to push app notifications to the device. BlackBerry's in theory should not have any access to this, so push notifications from the cloud should not work.

Amazon apps on the other hand use their own equivalent to GCM called Amazon Device Messaging. Now that BlackBerry has obtained an official right to use the Amazon app store I would hope that ADM would work with Amazon Android apps installed on BlackBerry devices.

We're not talking about Snap sending update notices.

However, if you installed Cobalt's patched Google Play Store, you will get app update notifications.

OK. Gotcha now. So having the Play Store installed is required to get notifications to work correctly. Is this also a dependency on an official Android phone?

No. Only if you want update notifications. The rest of the notifications work fine without any other Google crap installed.

Thx Conite. I misread you previous post. App updates dependent on Play Store being installed make sense. What I don't understand is how app specific notifications that rely on GCM would work on BB10? And it also seems hit and miss. Some apps push notifications, while others don't. This has been my experience at least on 10.2.1.

Unfortunately it's a bit of a mystery as BlackBerry has never explicitly stated anything about the inner workings of the Runtime.

It seems that someway, somehow many apps can function with Google's cloud notification service - because there can be no other explanation as to how some of these apps get their notifications. For instance, Kik is not constantly using data (ie: polling) , but somehow gets notifications instantly pushed to it.

I do wish BlackBerry would put out a tech bulletin on this subject.

Some people have been getting C2DM push notifications to the HUB since 10.3.1.

My fiance phone just yesterday received her first instagram (latest version as of today from SNAP) push notification in the hub.

I cant seem to get it to work on mine.

Its all very frustrating.

I thought C2DM was pre GCM and is no longer supported? Most new Android apps should be using GCM. Interesting how Instagram notifications work on your wife's phone. I wouldn't have expected them to.

Where did you download the yahoo sports app? I'm wondering if it matters where you download it to get notifications.
