- Tre LawrenceBetween RealitiesI know what you mean about iPhones. This week I got an iPhone 7 and there is an improvement over my weenie little 5C I had before because the KB much wider but it is still no PKB for feedback and accuracy for me.
I write also, and for me I make far less mistakes and have more enjoyment on a PKB. When it is frustrating to type it is not as enjoyable and therefore not as productive. On the iPhone I do not enjoy responding to messages or notifications but on my 9900 I actually look foreword to it and reply back more often. I think as writers, whatever makes us more productive with as little stress as possible, makes us more creative and elaborative, and therefore more effective etc.
What I would like to see is the stock PKB texting champion vs the same for VKB.
When I switched to Android/vkb as a personal daily driver, it was done very reluctantly: I had lost a BB, and then received a non-functional replacement, and since I didn't want an iPhone and had some limited expreience on the wife's HTC Hero, I decided to use an EVO as a loaner till i could get the BB.
When i figured out how to type with Swype ambidextrously shortly thereafter, I was sold. I also dictate and "hand"write.
My keyboard is very specific, so I am able to use the same one on all devices. But, if I was forced to use another vkb software, i would do so reluctantly. If I had to thumb type, I'd consider returning to vkb.
I also hate sliders. I am terrified of all the moving pieces LOL.anon(9721108) likes this.04-05-17 12:49 PMLike 1 -
Using various keyboards is part of the vkb reality - it is one of the differentiating features compared to a fixed pkb. It would be disingenuous to eliminate that advantage.
My BlackBerry Android device comes with a "stock" BlackBerry vkb, which has swipe gestures. Are you saying that's unfair?
I say if it's available on Google Play Store, it should be fair game for your challenge.David Tyler likes this.04-05-17 01:54 PMLike 1 -
- Haha... I, myself, am open to "cheating" if it truly improves speed without suffering precision. How many errors are too many? All depends on job description... And other jobs that job interfaces with...
For some of us, "auto-correct" is too much like a machine for setting slalom pylons back in place after you've knocked them down. You might set a slalom track record, and all pylons are back where they should be, but how that applies to "real life" depends on an individual's "real life". lol.
I've long advocated for a "Smartphone Olympics" just to objectively compare which tool works best for which job. I work with a few potential candidates.
Time permitting, I can visualize myself competing in a "business commuter" category... ... single handed typing, replying, forwarding, updating documents-calendar-contacts, etc, etc, with briefcase in hand while rushing thru crowded terminal to catch a plane, train, or bus. Any single error is disqualifying.
Others will likely define categories of their own... Lol... That's why there's trials, enduro, motocross, f1, ... Lol.
Of course, I'd rather spend that time on my old Bultaco or Goldstar or in Porsche... 9900... & generally prefer to leave setting up pylons to those who knock them down... Lol.04-06-17 10:38 AMLike 0 - It is awesome getting back using Blackberry. I have gone back and forth using either Blackberry or iphone. At this time my iphone SE, is my active phone. I'm typing this on my Q10. My last Blackberry used for my actual phone is 9900 series Bold. The youtube quality wasn't so hot. I cannot believe how good this Q10 is for surfing the Web and watching youtube! I just ordered the black Blackberry Passport so I can get a feel for it. It seems to me Blackberry really has a lot going for it still. I like BlackBerry as its a little more quirky than most smartphones. I'm getting a little bored with iphones..they are great.. but in my opinion BlackBerry has more personality.

Both are great phones but I do prefer the Bold for its compact size and one hand user ability with coffee on the other

Also, problem with occupying both hands to operate a handset is finding a desk to set the coffee mug onto.anon(9721108) likes this.04-14-17 07:16 PMLike 1

- I will clarify and say I still enjoy all of the native apps related to communication and organization like the Hub, calendar, tasks, etc. But there are small things that really bug me, and it is probably worse since I know they will never get updated and fixed. I also would really enjoy having some apps that aren't available.

Sent from my BlackBerry 9900 using Tapatalk04-18-17 05:34 PMLike 0 - There are many reason why i stick to BB devices these many years.
I might quite boring you guys but I love this forum to express my love with BB devices.
1) Design:
whether it is Bold or any other BB10 devices, they are the best in design in the market. their design prove the exact meaning of Smart Phone.
2) Qwerty Keypad/Board:
most important reason to stick with it is its physical keyboard. i write long emails to my clients/vendors and i prefer to type fast without any typo which is not possible touch keypad/board. not only me, most of the people around the world loves the keypad/board for sure.
3) LED indicator:
this is the most awesome feature and classy too. its not necessary to look your phone often to check the notification when it is on silent mode. Any notification your LED red light indicates you new notifications (IM, SMS, Emails, Missed calls) arrived.
4) BBM
Blackberry messenger, my personal opinion is bbm is the god father of any messenger. i really don't care about whatsapp which stopping its support to BBOS and its devices. who really cares, we got an awesome messenger BBM. I am the boss of my company, BBM is available now on all other OS platform so if some one need to chat or interact with me ill ask them download BBM, else call me. soon i will provide BB devices to my employees.
5) Email Signature:
this might feel quite silly, i love this very much. when i send emails or reply to any emails its says
"sent from BlackBerry on Airtel"
i personally feel that this will differentiate me for using BB devices.
there are many features to described but i am re collecting my nostalgia with this device i had.
its been so many years, i started with curve 8520 and now i am using bold and q10. in between i tried iphone but it really doesnt suite me.
BB - Blackberry
BB - Be Bold
BB - Business Beast
regret typo errors / grammar errors if any

It better be secure because I just started using Apple Pay04-18-17 08:57 PMLike 0 - I'm not sure what anybody means by "scientific proof" about any overall smartphone keyboard speed records. This quote from the referenced article says it was "a record attempt at the fastest time to type a text message on a touch screen mobile phone." The message was only twenty words, and this response was typed slooowly on my Bold 9900 but only cause I'm tired. ^.~ Further, by "nosing" around the GWR site, I found this great link about a guy who practiced his test statement six hours per day for months before his attempt- Man sets new Guinness World Record for typing with his NOSE | Daily Mail Online
All it proves is that on this day, at this time, using this specific keyboard on this specific phone, this particular person who had practiced for x number of hours was able to type this set of words faster than anybody else who has taken the time to engage in this kind of contest that has been conducted by and written up in GWR. My research and stat classes in grad school were many moons ago, but with all those variables, I'm pretty sure it's only scientific in the least sense because the results can be quantified and compared with.....what? I think it would be considered a case study among others aimed at a very specialized goal, therefore it's no more conducive for extrapolation to the real world than a land speed record is to regular daily driving. It's probably impossible to accommodate all the variables necessary to determine the best mobile device keyboard.
But that's not my reason for posting here!
I'm trying to decide whether to get a q10 or not. I've used one before and went for a Bold and a slab instead, and now when searching around I read tales of crappy browsers and Docs to Go being bad news on BBX, etc. etc. I'm confused by the variety of results and ain't tekno logical enough to sort it all out. Is it just the luck of the draw, so try the OS that seems to work for the most people? DtG needs to be at least as useful as the 9900s, plus with more current file types of course. In other words, it's crap compared to what exactly, and what is it not able to do now, free from speculations about future fixes? I'll generally drink hemlock before using anything Google other than Youtube, the BB app situation was pretty pitiful back in my brief q10 days, and my slab is a Windows Phone, so my need for apps is obviously pretty small, especially the social ones. I've already hunted around here for hours and don't know where else to turn, so thanks for any assistance.
PS-My first BB was a 9670 Style, and I was hooked once realizing that a Blackberry could be used for serious work on a dissertation. The best part is the freedom to work almost anywhere, almost anytime and under all sorts of conditions, plus it fits in my freakin' pocket.Last edited by KeebordKrazy; 05-08-17 at 01:40 AM. Docs to Go works better too. Maybe people have high expectations for a mobile office suite, but I find it better than Microsoft's Office Mobile on Windows phone. If that doesn't work for you, it can run Softmaker Office (pretty much the only full feature mobile office suite). I find mobile office suites in general pretty crap.
It's pretty much the same physical size, waaaay better battery life, much better camera.
For the 9900, I'm not decided about the keyboard. Could go either way depending on the day. The way BB10 handles flagging emails & tasks is different, I might prefer the Bold way.
The one thing the 9900 really shines & beats the Q10 is that dang trackpad! It's fabulous for editing text, selecting things, just about everything.
Q10 is one of, if not the favourite phone in my arsenal. But I'm sending this from my 9900 so.... :-)
Sent from my BlackBerry 9900 using Tapatalkanon(9721108) likes this.05-02-17 10:50 PMLike 1 - Thanks Efats. That told me what I needed, and sounds like the q10 will work well as my solo carry, able to do enough of what the Bold and slab can. I'll just drag one or the other of them along when their strengths are needed.
Unless anybody wants to chime in about OS version stability and common bug issues related to each, I'm good to go.
And idssteve, about my " "Smartphone Olympics" is no more objective than a game show, so "win on Sunday sell on Monday" is more accurate.", I getcha. Your idea sounds like a great one and I'd sure watch it. I got stuck in my nerd patrol saddle over the keyboard talk and forgot to get out.
And Tre, thanks for your comments about glass keyboards vs real ones. Imo you've really got your head on straight about the whole thing. The conversation these days sure beats the MMA knockdowns in the past.
Thanks for everybody's insights.
PS-Say Efats, is your screen name due to a penchant for playing pool online? 05-03-17 03:26 AMLike 0 - Ok, if you're willing to tell me which Gene Wilder film it was I promise not to ask about the family cat. 05-03-17 04:00 PMLike 0
