Again, we can endlessly argue about how big, small or nill the gap is (for BB10 OS), when it comes to apps, but we can't deny the fact that BlackBerry already acknowledged these gaps... that's why 'Priv' is coming...

It may or may not big for us, but big enough for BlackBerry to produce Android based handset...

    Let's rephrase the question

Why is bb10 selling so few handsets?

Marketing? I doubt it, all the advertising in the world wouldn't help.

Phone design? Passport is cool but wierd.

    Apps? Maybe?

Marketing and apps and a cool phone design? Hrrmm.

Maybe the other issues haven't been highly prioritized as the app achilles. And what are the other issues? Elaborate.
I've elaborated on those things many times in the forum here--several times posting with you to my recollection, so I'm sure you can get all the information on my opinion should you wish to read it.

You guys enjoy your pre-honeymoon phase dreaming about how great it will all be when we just finally get what everyone has always wanted--APPS! Reality will show up soon after that.

BlackBerry scoring on 2 out of the 3 things you mention (bolded by me in your quote above) won't do it, and if all 3 happen, I'll probably not be around to see it, because I'll drop dead from amazement.

What exactly has Apple or any Android manufacturer done to attract females, specifically, to their devices?

I was thinking Apple here for the most part. Take a look at their ads. More than half the people using their devices are younger women. Apple ads generally include a lot of people doing things and again, a substantial majority of the visual impressions are smiling women. Studies show that overwelmingly, women make the consumer decisions in modern society. So it's smart (and successful) strategy to focus on that demographic.

It's true that if your missing Snap Chat or Instagram, it's not the end o the world, but the fact is that a most of the banking apps and some of the important entertainment apps (netflix) are missing. Since Blackberry's target is mainly enterprise, they would need those banking apps. And finally since a lot of business users are not migrating to BB10 (Blackberry's most important demographic), tells you something is definitely missing. So Blackberry did the right thing by trying out an android device, with all the apps available.

most local (country specific) apps are android or ios only, for example, in singapore
    ActiveSG
    MyTransport
    myENV
    POSB/DBS

also, most devices only connect via android or ios, for example
    garmin connect
    panasonic image app
    olympus ol.share
    htc re

also, some android apps that can be installed on bb are not working properly

One has to wonder, however, how much, if any market research Chen has done PRIOR to developing and producing the Priv to determine that people will buy a BlackBerry-branded phone, even if it has an ecosystem of apps and an OS that people have adopted.

Seems to me that he's grasping at straws.

It is not that you are in the minority of BB10 users. You are in the minority of potential buyers of a smartphone. They want a working app store and Google play features. The Amazon phone and website for their phone was a failed idea. Few if any want a forked Android. BB10 was DOA .

It might be the comment should be broadened to include Apple App store as well. . . .

From time to time, I challenge people to delete the majority of their apps for 10 days. I am certain it will come as no surprise, but it seems most are satisfied with between 8 and 20 apps. I would suggest the obsession with apps is somewhat akin to having a TV in every room of the house, including the bathroom. Nice, but not necessary. And arguably just not good . . .

I know I will be in the minority. If I really need something, I just call my banker and tell her. Otherwise, most of my banking is automatic, from debits for phone, to utilities, etc.

As an aside, and this is more a broad general statement: banking fees have not decreased, and yet, the individual has been sold a bill of goods to do things themselves that the bank once did as part of its commitment to customer service. Hence great profits for your bank. In addition, they sell your aggregated data . . .

I coul continue about products produced overseas and sold back in our home countries for the same or more than the original good cost when produced domestically. And before any one accuses me of being socialist, I am a dyed in the wool capitalist. However, I wonder from time to time, who will purchase the products when wages are low, or the entire economy is service based or when nothing of substance is produced domestically.

Even if it's only 4 apps and those apps aren't there it's not good. Then if those 4 apps are all different for every person it multiplies. That's why a big variety is important for consumers and enterprise a like.

There have been many post in these forums that an app they need for their job is either unavailable and the android player doesn't work for it either.

I'm fine with the app selection on my Passport. I only use the Android versions of my bank's app and my mobile carrier app. I could do just fine with the browser version of the latter.

The main app gap for me is the apps available for cab bookings in India. I travel a lot and every other day I'm in constant need for cabs to commute locally in the cities which I'm visiting. i.e. airport and hotel to and fro transfers.

Popular services like Ola, Taxi for Sure etc are all available on iOS, Android and some even on Windows. You can book a cab in instant with these apps as they uses your GPS location to find the cab nearest to you. The cab drivers would also have the same app installed which will track their position and send this location to the users. Its easy and convenient.

Its not available on BB10, I always struggle with bookings. Most of the time I fail to do these bookings online via my laptop as these services are best with their apps. I have rely on my wife's android phone. It's more trouble when she is attending her office meetings.

I have tried downloading these apps through Snap but it doesn't work as it requires Google Play services.

It is not the question of acknowledging they have to have the entire gamut of app ecosystem and they have to have it now.One has to assume and it is correct to do so... that even a top corporate honcho will use different kinda apps for various purposes.Now-a-days,he does not need the phone strictly for productive/official purpose.Currently, It is unimaginable/unthinkable for developers to pitch in for BB10 platform so embracing android is the only way out.All said and done this move should have been forthcoming couple of years back, at this point in time it is in the realm of uncertainty. It is very tough for BBRY to convince people to go in and buy their devices even if it is android

I wanted Uber for a part time job and to use their services. I contacted Uber and they replied back that they have no plans for BlackBerry BB10.

Apple targets the masses so, naturally, that includes women and even children. Apple has always been this way, though. It's ads have always focused on how many different people use Apple devices in different ways. BlackBerry isn't even targeting everyday consumers anymore.

So true. The lack of a fingerprint device means BlackBerry I walking roughshod over the next big thing which is point-&-tap payments using fingerprint authentication...a cash cow slip-slidin' away from their Priv...

Yeah. I have read Cobalt's hack and app patcher thread but I didn't find time to try it. Didn't know about Android emulations though. Thanks for the tip.

But, my main concern is BlackBerry has neglected these kind of small apps which makes lot of difference in daily routine. In India, cheap private taxi services has become a revolution as against auto rickshaws. More and more people are find it convenient way to commute but they are easily available through their apps only. I know these are country specific apps but BlackBerry should have consider these small things if they want to win more customers for BB10 in India.
