Default Basic questions wifi and data service

Hello,

I've got a few questions...

First of all, I have a blackberry curve 9360 en I pay for blackberry internet.
Now I will give my old blackberry 8520 to my girlfriend.. She doens't pay for internet.

A few questions:

1. Do you need payed internet for BBM or does it work just fine without it? I mean does it works without wifi, dataservice,..

2. What do i need to turn off when I go on holiday?? Dataservice, roaming??
So i don't receive emails or am able to browse or facebook,... But I still have to be able to receive phonecalls and textmessages and BMM if possible!

3. When does a blackberry use wifi?
When i turn off Dataservice and roaming, i can send textmessages, but no emails?? I'm connected to WIFI. Also i can't browse or go to facebook. So why doesn't it send emails over wifi or can't I go on to facebook or internet with wifi??

4. When my girlfriend is at home and she uses wifi, what will she able of doing with here blackberry? Email, browsing, facebook?
What does she has to turn off, so she doesn't receive emails or facebooknotifications or is able to browse on internet when she isn't connected to wifi??

I think that's all for now.

PS: I think there will be already topics about this, but I need clear and fast answers, because this is a bit new to me. (In fact that blackberry 8520 was my moms, so my mom got a new torch 9810, i got a new 9360 and my girlfriend gets the old 8520)

BTW: I'm new, 19 years old, studying physiotherapist and from belgium!

I hope for some quick and usefull answers!

Thanks!

Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year!

1. Yes, you need a BIS account to use BBM. there is no work around for using it purely on WiFi as it uses the RIM servers.

2. Go in to your mobile network options and turn data while roaming OFF. when connected to Wifi you will still get your emails and such unless you disabled your email address via BIS login/email setup.

3 and 4: it seems that you might not have a full BIS account because you're on pay as you go. you carrier might limit on what you can/cant do. You will want to get a full BIS plan on both phones to take advantage of using FaceBook and such over WiFi.

Search the forums for anything else. you state you want FAST answers, and the fastest ones are the ones you find yourself with out waiting for our replies.

Thank you for your answer Its been helpfull.

I have a BIS, but girlfriend not

Other question: If you use BBM daily for 1 month, and you text with 2 persons daily for about max. 60 text messages a day and lets say 10 photos a month: how much MB would you use?? (This is for my girlfriend who hasn't a BIS but a normal internservice from her provider, like 10Mb for free or something)
