Thumbs up Windermere and Ontario: Blackberry's next two devices?

So with the recent 10.3 leak I have been looking around the OS and found very clear evidence of the next two devices that will hopefully be released by Blackberry. First is the already known device code named 'Ontario' which will feature the Snapdragon 800 CPU and a resolution of 1080 x 1920. Second device is code named 'Windermere' which looks to have an interesting resolution of 1440 x 1440, which leads me to believe it will be most likely a tablet or an unusually large phablet.

Post your thoughts and findings below.

My sources say a 5" qwerty is on the making.. and that source is pretty accurate most of the time..

Most won't believe me though.. seeing how I'm a new user and all.

Look at it this way, Q10 was 1:1 with a resolution of 720x720.

    Isn't 1440x1440 a 1:1 resolution as well?

Given the large 5" square screen that was recently found, I would not be surprised. I am hoping both come to fruition, though, choosing between the two will be difficult...

It would be like a computer in your hands with full keyboard. And have a screen bigger than a Note due to aspect ratio.

Interesting that I write this on a Nexus 7 . With the virtual keyboard "up" you get more or less a 5 inch 1:1 screen. As I imagine a device with minimal bezels it is quite doable. I am not sure though as I type that a physical keyboard would be better than a virtual keyboard.

With regard to the Note . A 5 inch screen is a 5 inch screen no matter what the aspect ratio. Fat vs Tall.

Well according to my source once again..

He claims it's a whole new patent made by blackberry and it's going to be different than anything else, including the keyboard.

I just hope it doesn't get scrapped like the rest of the devices put on hold.

Sounds intriguing. The 1:1 ratio doesnt feel right for a 5" screen, even with a novel way of adding a physical keyboard.

3.5" to 4" seems like the biggest a 1:1 ratio could get without looking too boxy/goofy. But we'll see what BlackBerry can pull off

Pardon? Area = length * width, doesn't matter if it's rectangular or not, the area will be the same.

Maximum optimal area is always square. You learn this in math class.

A 5inch 1x1 aspect ratio phone would be crazy unwieldy. Especially with a physical keyboard... I will be interested to see how that looks, but I don't hold high hopes.

The difference in area of a rectangle or a square when the diagonal is 5 inches is inconsequential.

The industry measures the screen on the diagonal. For practical purposes rectangular screen of 5 inches would be better than a square screen of 5 inches. I just have to look at my Nexus 7 with the keyboard showing and assume that phone would have a very minimal bezel. This square screened "phone" with a 5 inch screen would be much larger than a Z30 because of the physical keyboard.

Personally I think the upper limit of a square screened phone should be around 4 inches or maybe 4.5 max.

Personally I would rather have a 5 inch all touch phone vs the significantly larger 4.5 inch Q model.

I think these are the high end devices Chen referred to. New top spec qwerty and all-touch. The q20 has been mentioned, but that's not receiving special treatment, I'd guess at a 720x720 screen, so it can share dev with the q10. Wouldn't show up in a leaked OS either.

Similarly, I don't expect any other foxconn devices to be using new resolutions, so their potential existence is still a secret.

We've seen the leaks, there's definitely some ideas going around. I'm just excited that they're trying different things. I figure I'll be replacing my z10 by year end, just have to wait to see what comes out!

I think that a 5 inch square device is a really bad idea. I'm hoping for the windermere to be a device that resembles in size the iPhone with the typo keyboard. I want a mainstream smartphone with all of the best features, a usable screen and the best physical keyboard. I think that could be successful. This square...thing, if it comes to fruition will unwieldy and will be mocked.

I understand that a square of 4 units has a perimeter of 8 units and a 1 by 4 rectangle has a perimeter of 10 units.
But art galleries are not full of square paintings.

And movies aren't show on a square screen and no one makes tvs with a square screen anymore either. The days of the 1:1 aspect ratio are dead and buried. BlackBerry is the only "major" phone maker to still use that aspect ratio. I so love using a phone with a physical keyboard, it just makes typing and doing work just so enjoyable. But I also have a life and like to watch videos and maybe play a game every once in a while to pass the time. Is it so wrong for me to want a qwerty phone that can do both work and play?
