Will RIM now fix the naming system?

originally the naming system made sense. a x1xx was a SureType device and a x3xx was a lower-end full keyboard device.

but now it's all screwed up.

a 9700 is a Bold, but a 9650 is also a Bold. but a 9670 is a Style and a flip and a 9630 is a Tour.

A 9300 is a curve, but so is a 8900, and a 8500 and a 9500 is completely different.

my solution: stick to a simple system: xyz, where x is the generation, y is the device model, and z is the submodel

example:
A01: 11th generation Bold, refresh
A10: 11th generation Pearl, first literation
A33: 11th generation Curve, CDMA literation
B52: 12th generation Storm, second refresh

Maybe there is nothing to fix...

I guess, the OS7 devices will be the last ones with that system...

The new generation (QNX - Superphones) could start with a new system, to seperate from the "traditional" BBs?

the Number can't directly be tied to the Brand.

you can't have a
Bold A10
Curve A10

you limit your ability to expand the brand.

I'd like to see the part numbering system be 5 digit.
B0000
P0000
"B" signifying Blackberry device
"P" signifying Playbook device
as there is a potential for 6-9 Playbook models being sold at the same time!

the 4Digit code would need to be broken down as
First digit would be a generation family, (OS7 family, QNX1 family, QNX2 family etc)
Second digit would be an identifier, (9,8,7 Bolds, 6,5,4 Curves, 3,2 Touch screen, 1,0 pearls or something like that
3rd digit would indicate carrier/radio,
4th digit would be a modifier, (with camera/with out, With NFC/with out, etc)
finally an additional Letter to be affixed in the computer systems to distinguish colour of the device. though the colour suffix would not be in the software
