Default Will I be charged for using BlackBerry Maps?

Hello

I just switched my plan today and now have unlimited social networking and instant messaging (BBM). When I connected my BlackBerry to my computer, I got an option to install BlackBerry Maps so I did. (This is the first time I get some sort of BlackBerry plan, before this I only had texting and minutes).
I started using BlackBerry Maps for directions and it worked. I noticed at the bottom of the app it says 358.1KB were used (I'm not connected to WiFi).

Will I get charged for this since I don't have a data plan?
Usually Rogers blocks apps that require data (like Screen Muncher).

Thanks!

In case this helps, here's my plan:

450 day minutes (unlimited weekends and from 6pm-7am)
Caller ID & Voicemail
Unlimited instant messaging and social networking
2500 text messages
40.33$ + tax

Thanks for the answer!

If it requires data, why isn't it blocked? App World is blocked for me when I'm not on WiFi, and so is the browser...
Can I block it myself?

Thanks!

I'd simply remove Blackberry Maps from my phone if I were you. That way you won't ever have to worry about incurring extra data charges outside of your social networking plan.

To my mind, a significant portion of the usefulness of the BlackBerry (beyond that simply as a phone) lies in the data capabilities of the device.
If you're happy with simply being able to email, IM and text to your Facebook/Twitter Friends, that's great - but you're only using a tiny fraction of the functionality of the device - and paying Rogers more for services that cost them nearly nothing. And while you seem to have a not bad price for what you have, you are limiting yourself.

As you've found, some additional functionality will be granted to you when on wifi, but really, what you are doing on your BlackBerry could be achieved on a pretty basic mobile phone. Why buy a car when all you really need to do is to get to the end of the driveway?

But what about Google Maps? Will you get charged for that too?

I can't see why this is a 'of course'. I have unlimited data. I'm gonna call Vodafone tomorrow.

Our repsonses were to BTFan, who has a social networking plan. That kind of plan only provides data using social networking apps native to Blackberries (e.g. BBM, email, MSN messenger, Facebook, etc.) Therefore, any other app used aside from these would incur extra data charges, since they are not covered by this kind of data plan.

In your case however, if you have an unlimited data plan (i.e. Not a social networking plan), you need not worry. This would not apply to you.

Thanks for all the responses!

Do you guys know how I can block these apps? I know I can remove BlackBerry Maps but what about other apps? If I call Rogers, would they be able to block anything not allowed on my plan?

Last question: it says unlimited social networking. What are ALL the apps I can use at no extra charge?

Thanks

The apps you could use with no worry of incurring extra data charges would be all the social networking apps native to blackBerry (e.g. Facebook. Twitter, MSN messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AIM, BBM, Myspace, and email). There may be others that I've left out, so you may want phone up Rogers to give you a more comprehensive list of apps covered under your plan. And you can also ask them if it's possible to block other apps that aren't covered by your plan. Whatever they can't block you can still remove using the right tools, like BBSAK, for instance.
