Default Using BB in China

I'm going to China for a 2 week vacation in October. I want to use my BB Bold 9700 there. I would most likely just be texting back to Canada. I heard that if I use BB Messenger that there is no cost. I would like to see if anybody has any experience with texting or using BBM in China back to Canada. Thank you for your comments.

if you use it on Wifi, no charge.
if you use it on their network, big charges for data.... the choice is yours.

Just before you leave, go to Manage Connections and ensure you have unchecked Mobile Network. Also, while on this page, go to Mobile Network Options and ensure you have Data Services > While Roaming > Off.

The guidance Fubaz gives above re: Wi-fi is spot on.

As noted, of course, you don't want to ring up a bill with Rogers larger than the cost of your trip....

Thank you Fubaz and Bazza1 for your comments. I might leave my BB at home and look at another way. Maybe take a Calling Card with me to call Canada might an option.

there is a international texting package you can buy for 2 months. not cheap but its worth to ask and compare, but for sure I would use wi-fi only. there is more and more wi fi spots these days.

You can also look at buying a cheap pre-paid SIM card over there if you need phone capabilities. But then you'll have to get the phone unlocked if it's not already, and so on.

Easier to just leave it at home, even though even a few hours without a Blackberry would probably leave most of us feeling weird

Go here and check it out, I'd really consider getting the package BUT only for data, and don't use phonecalls or SMS.

for $50 dollars you can easily handle 2 weeks of BBM use in China.

Thank you for your comments. I was talking to a Rogers rep and he did not say anything about those packages. He just said that I will be charged about .75 to $1.00 per email I recevied. Pay .60 per BBM and very high roam charge for calls. Again thanks.

I am betting that your rep had never been to china and was predominately a consumer rep not a business rep, so he didn't even know the packages they offer,
