    Default Upgrade question

Is there anyway to get a upgrate before the 2 year mark? I ask this question because my wife's 8520 is all messed up. It speed dials all by it's self. It adsd extra E's when typing. Then I go and update it and now she needs to beat on the trackpad to make it work and the screen is all messed up and the icons are wierd and she says some some factory apps are missing. Any help would be great thanks.
She has had the phone for about 15 months now. It is on Rogers.

15 months means the usual one year warranty is up (Rogers would have likely just swapped out the phone with a refurb), so if you were to approach them now about repair, they'd likely be happy to send it in for repair - but it will cost you.

Still, contact Rogers about the issue and see what they say. You might find they might offer a replacement at a discount as an alternative to what could be an expensive repair.

If the solutions aren't really what your looking for, make sure the CSR notes the conversation on your file and then I'd be tempted to contact Customer Retentions and chat with them. They might be more forthcoming with a solution, especially if you suggest Rogers Support solutions are encouraging you to look elsewhere for phones / wireless provider.

I just got off the phone with Rogers CS and she said that they phone was out of warrenty and all that she could do for me is a 9300 or 9100 for $299. I am going to call retentions and she what they can do.

    That's nuts.

Anywhere near where you live to get refurb'd unlocked phones? Find something less than that, if you're not keen on a repair of your current phone.

Otherwise, I'd say go back to Retentions and tell them you're thinking of another carrier if forced to live with a phone that doesn't work and no realistic option to upgrade.

There is nobody around here that sells wholesale phones. I told retentions yesterday that I would leave and all they said was "ok then". I will more than likely pay off the remainder of the contract and go with Telus\Bell. I might try rententions again today and see what happens. Thanks for the help.

That is not a software issue, but it is a simple repair.

The keypad assembly can be swapped out with a simple screwdriver. Use Google to locate a Canadian parts supplier like this one in Toronto.

If Consumer Reports (Jan 2011) is anything to go by and you are determined to go elsewhere, one might consider Virgin or Fido over Telus or Bell.

Phones and signal pretty much all the same, but its the Customer Support to consider - and Bell is at the very bottom of the list. Weird that the 'discount' brands are rated better than their parent companies (Virgin = Bell, Fido = Rogers), but there we are. Too bad the parents can't learn from the children...

As Reed above notes, you could just get the hardware fixed, but if your confidence in your Provider is shaken, maybe a clean break is what you want.

Depending on where you like, you might want to try out Mobilicity or Wind. Stick it to the big boys. You will have to buy your own hardware but wind has a 40$/mo plan that is unlimited everything includign NA calling. Bell Rogers and Telus can't compete with that price. Mobilicity initiated such low rates, look into it, with the savings over 3 years you can get 2 high end phones vs the big boys.

So I called Rogers again today to see what the cost will be to cancel the line and they told me it would be $500. $400 for the voice and $100 for the data. So I will just stay with them until the contract is up. I got a BB 9000 from a family member for now.
