Default Upgrade - Is paying $199 for 9900 too much?

Hi all,

My wife and I both have BB Curve 8820 flip phones that we have had going on 3 years now and I am thinking of replacing them with 9900 Bolds. I did have my first 8820 flip phone replaced 12 months ago because the Bluetooth died on it and it just so happens that the Bluetooth on my replacement flip just died again a few weeks ago. It also happens that Roger's has been calling my cell everyday so I thought this might be a good time to talk to them.

I have been a Roger's customer for 20+ years now and I am due again for an upgrade. I told the Roger's rep that I was looking at the 9900 Bold and she said that I would have to pay $199 but there would be no $35 admin fee and was willing to take $5/month dollars off something (not sure what) if I signed a new contract right away. We didn't even discuss upgrading my wife's phone.

I told her that I would get back to her because she could only offer my the new Torch's as the 9900's were not in stock.

Current Plans

My Plan:
Pooled Family Eve/Wkend Plan 15.00
500MB BlackBerry (BIS) Service 25.00
Every Call Value Pack* 12.00
System Access Fee 6.95
9-1-1 Emergency Access Fee 0.75
Total before taxes: $61.10

Wife's Plan:
Pooled Family Eve/Wkend Plan 20.00
500MB BlackBerry (BIS) Service 25.00
Call Display w/Name Display 8.00
9-1-1 Emergency Access Fee 0.75
System Access Fee 6.95
Total before taxes: $62.10

So couple of questions:

1. Do you think $199 (each) to upgrade to 9900 is the correct price for a 20 year customer who is eligible for upgrade(s)? Can I get the 9900's for less?
2. Are we getting ripped off on these plans? I am thinking yes.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

The $199 per device is ok. Bell, Telus, and Virgin(Bell) have it for less though. Their earlier proposal of $249, even though just $50 more seemed somewhat ridiculous.

You can certainly do better on the plans. I pay $43.75 (includes tax) and get a gig of data, bis, unlimited weekends and evenings, 125 texts, 250 daytime minutes, voicemail, caller ID, and I have a full SAF credit. I'm on a retentions modified corporate plan though.

Check over at HowardForums in the Rogers retentions threads. Lots of great advice there, and a ton of other examples of plans, etc... over there too.

Be sure to post what you end up doing too. Many of us do appreciate it when our plans come up.

199$ is fine. The link iamnewtobb posted is only good for new Rogers customers.
As for your plan, you can definitely get much better. I've been with Rogers for 9 years and after a lot of calling and negotiating, here's my plan:

300 weekday minutes
Unlimited incoming calls
Unlimited evenings after 6pm and weekends

500MB BlackBerry data plan
Unlimited BBM

Call display & name display
Enhanced voicemail & voicemail to text
Unlimited Extreme texts (text, photo and video messaging)
Unlimited texting from Canada to anywhere in the world
Mobile Backup
Ringbacks

No contract

40.25$ +tax/month
