Default Unlocked BB 9700 - No Data Plan

My friend got me a slightly used BB 9700 for my bday that was previously locked to Rogers but is now Unlocked. Not knowing much about smartphones I just poped my SIM and started using Wi-Fi, downloading apps, watching youtube... everything works great except I don't have a Data Plan.

After searching I realized that Data Plan is set on your PIN not your SIM card so if I take my SIM out and set Data to ON I can do everything and all apps seem to be working great.

My question is am I using previous owner's PIN number and his Data Plan ? Or did it somehow create a new PIN for my rogers account and I will get charged for using data with no data plan even though I used Wi-fi connection ? Help me clear this out, thank you.

A data plan is set to your service with your carrier. The pin is set your device which runs on a BIS data plan from your carrier. If you would like to use it with your current provider, you will need to get a BlackBerry Data plan so that you can use BBM and email. You should not get any charges as you did not have bb plan. WIFI allows you to browse the web via hotspot browser and download apps only. Hope that clears things up.

And data applications require Service Books on a BlackBerry to work, even over WiFi.

Most likely, the device still has the Service Books loaded which is what is permitting you to use WiFi for YouTube.

As long as you use WiFi, you would not be charged by your carrier. But you will not be able to access data features over the carrier network without a data plan. And if the Service Books go away (which can happen with a device reboot or reloading the device software), you won't be able to get them back without the proper data plan.
